Burger Chain International Expansion 2026: What Actually Opened
Which 2026 burger chain deals abroad actually opened? Burger King, Wendy's, Shake Shack and Fatburger, checked one by one as of October 9, 2026.

Burger chain international expansion in 2026 has produced far fewer openings than the headlines suggest. As of October 9, 2026, three deals are done: Burger King’s new China joint venture (closed February 2, 2026), Burger King’s UK master franchise, now extended to Ireland, and Fatburger’s first restaurant in France, at Rosny 2 near Paris. Wendy’s in Italy is late. Shake Shack in Vietnam and Panama is still a 2026 promise with no verified opening date.
I track these deals for the Burger Breton news hub. For this piece I checked every announcement against the latest dated source I could find on October 9, 2026, and gave each one a status: open, signed, delayed or announced. The trade press covers deals one at a time, usually on press-release day, and rarely goes back to check. This tracker does.

2026 burger chain expansion tracker: status as of October 9, 2026
Of the ten burger chain moves below, three were done deals in 2026: a closed joint venture, a signed master franchise and one open restaurant. The rest are signed for later, delayed or still on paper. I kept to burger specialists: no KFC, no Popeyes, no pizza.

Burger King: China joint venture and UK-Ireland master franchise
Burger King made the two biggest confirmed international moves of 2026: a new ownership structure in China and a renewed master franchise covering the UK and, for the first time, the Republic of Ireland.
Burger King China joint venture: who owns what
The Burger King China joint venture between Restaurant Brands International (RBI) and private equity firm CPE closed on February 2, 2026. CPE put in US$350 million of new capital and holds about 83% of the business, while RBI keeps about 17%, according to Nation’s Restaurant News and CPE’s legal adviser Morrison Foerster.
An affiliate of Burger King China received an exclusive 20-year master franchise. The target is steep: from about 1,250 restaurants in 2025 to more than 4,000 by 2035, which works out to roughly 275 openings a year. RBI gave up majority control to get a funded local partner. I think that was the right call. At that pace, local capital matters more than control.
Burger King UK: 30+ openings and a first step into Ireland
Burger King UK plans more than 30 openings in Britain in 2026, 18 to 20 of them company-operated, plus more than 60 refurbishments. It reported 2025 revenue of £448.7 million, up 10%, according to The Caterer on April 13, 2026.
The company also signed a new master franchise of about 20 years with Burger King Europe GmbH, and for the first time the territory crosses the Irish Sea into the Republic of Ireland. For product launches market by market, see our roundup of new Burger King burgers and Whopper launches in 2026.
Fatburger in France: first restaurant at Rosny 2
Fatburger’s first restaurant in France is open inside the Rosny 2 shopping center on avenue du Général de Gaulle in Rosny-sous-Bois, just east of Paris. It is a hybrid unit of about 120 m² (roughly 1,300 sq ft) that pairs Fatburger with Buffalo’s Express.

The master franchisee is Big M, led by Mehdi Bella and Yannis Ourabia, with a target of 30 restaurants in France. The opening date depends on the source: Fast Casual reported the debut on March 25, 2026, while LSA gave April 2. I could not settle the exact day, so I am not giving one.
Big M also announced two more French openings for later in 2026, one in the north and one in the south. As of October 9, 2026, I found no confirmation that either has opened. A shared counter in a suburban mall is a cautious start for a brand that sells itself on Los Angeles neon. Big M is aiming for 30 restaurants and has opened one.

Wendy’s Italy opening: Milan delayed, Rome next
No Wendy’s restaurant has opened in Italy as of October 9, 2026. The first two were planned for Milan in the first half or the middle of 2026, but Milan was still “in development” on September 17, 2026, according to retail&food.
The same report says a lease of about 170 m² (roughly 1,830 sq ft) has been signed at the Euroma2 shopping center in Rome, with an opening “most likely in the autumn” of 2026. That makes Rome, not Milan, the likeliest first Italian Wendy’s. Of all the 2026 announcements, this is the clearest case of a deadline slipping.

The deal itself dates from July 2025. Wendy’s announced an exclusive franchise agreement with Your Food S.R.L. for 170 restaurants by 2035, per the company. Your Food brings together Gruppo Resca (led by Mario Resca, a former head of McDonald’s Italia), BGenera, Venus and First Capital. One loose end: retail&food’s 2026 report names the operator Iconic Burger, not Your Food, and I have not seen that difference explained.
Wendy’s in Armenia and the wider international plan
Wendy’s has a restaurant open on Abovyan Street in central Yerevan, the first under an exclusive deal with Wen Restaurant LLC for 20 Armenian restaurants by 2030, reported by CivilNet. The exact opening date is unconfirmed and most likely falls before 2026, so I do not count it as a 2026 opening.
Both deals serve a bigger goal. Wendy’s wants 70% of its unit growth to come from outside the United States and is targeting 2,000 international restaurants in 2028. France is among the European markets open to candidates, but no French deal had been signed as of June 25, 2026, according to L’Express Franchise. For how Wendy’s international sales have held up this year, read our analysis of the price war between McDonald’s, Burger King and Wendy’s.
Shake Shack new markets: Vietnam, Panama and Brazil
Shake Shack has signed three new markets for its licensed business, but none of the 2026 entries had a verified opening by October 9, 2026. Vietnam and Panama are both promised for 2026; Brazil is set for 2027.
Shake Shack Vietnam with Maxim’s Caterers
Shake Shack announced a partnership with Maxim’s Caterers on August 12, 2025 for 15 Shacks in Vietnam by 2035, according to the company. The plan includes a first flagship in 2026 and collaborations with local producers and artists. No city, address or date has been confirmed.

Shake Shack is entering a market Burger King has largely left, a retreat we covered in our guide to Lotteria in Da Nang.
Shake Shack Panama: first stop in Central America
Shake Shack’s partnership with Grupo Attie-Multifood Enterprises plans 12 Shacks in Panama by 2035, with the first due in 2026, per Chain Store Age. It will be the brand’s first location in Central America, with about 400 jobs and a menu that includes local flavors. No date or site has been published.
Shake Shack Brazil: São Paulo in 2027
The Brazil deal with São Paulo’s Bold Hospitality covers 40 restaurants by 2036, with the first opening in São Paulo in 2027, reported by Zacks via TradingView. It is an announcement, not a 2026 opening.
Of the three, only Brazil comes with a named city, and it is the furthest away. If you would rather taste the brand than wait, try our Shackburger copycat recipe.
Other burger chain moves: Carl’s Jr. in Barcelona, Freddy’s in North America
Beyond Burger King, Wendy’s and Shake Shack, Carl’s Jr. and Freddy’s show two other growth paths: a big flagship in a new European city, and steady franchising close to home.
Carl’s Jr. opened at Ronda Universitat 31 in Barcelona in late 2025, reported Directo al Paladar. It covers about 500 m² over two floors with 140 seats, in the brand’s “Omni” concept, and the average check is about €17. The operator, Mexican group Fudlicious via Avanza Food, plans up to 10 more Barcelona restaurants within five years. The brand is long established in Mexico, as our guide to Carl’s Jr. in Cancún shows.
Spain is a crowded market for newcomers. Alimarket counted close to 2,800 restaurants run by the main burger chains in Spain in March 2026, according to the public summary of its report.
Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers plans about 60 openings in 2026 and is nearing 600 restaurants across the US and Canada. It is recruiting franchisees in the US, Canada and Mexico, per Yahoo Finance.
What is a master franchise, and why burger chains use it abroad
A master franchise gives one local company the exclusive right to develop a brand across a whole country or region, usually for a long term and against a store-count target. Almost every deal in this tracker uses that model.
The 2026 deals show it everywhere. Burger King China’s affiliate holds an exclusive 20-year master franchise. Burger King UK signed one of about 20 years that now includes Ireland. Big M holds Fatburger’s rights in France with a 30-restaurant goal, and Wendy’s Italian partner has a 170-restaurant target by 2035. The chain gets local capital, real estate know-how and a partner who knows the market; the partner gets a brand and a territory no rival can enter.
Horizontal bar chart of restaurant targets in 2026 burger chain master franchise deals (log scale): Burger King China 4,000+ by 2035 (from about 1,250 in 2025), Wendy’s Italy 170 by 2035, Shake Shack Brazil 40 by 2036, Fatburger France 30, Wendy’s Armenia 20 by 2030, Shake Shack Vietnam 15 by 2035, Shake Shack Panama 12 by 2035. McDonald’s local menu items around the world: the Singapore example
McDonald’s builds limited-time burgers around local tastes, and Singapore offered two clear examples in 2026. Same chain, different burger.
A McDonald’s restaurant at Forum the Shopping Mall in Singapore, the market that sold the local Rendang Curry Beef Burger (S$9.50, from July 23, 2026) and the Korean-inspired Spicy Bulgogi Chicken Burger (from October 1, 2026) (photo 2005). On July 9, 2026, McDonald’s Singapore launched a National Day collaboration with Old Chang Kee. The Curry Potato Chicken Burger cost S$9.20 (S$11.20 as a double). The Rendang Curry Beef Burger followed on July 23 at S$9.50 (S$12.30 as a double), alongside limited-edition Curry McShaker Fries for an extra S$1.25, according to Eatbook.
On October 1, 2026, a Korean-inspired menu with K-pop star G-DRAGON reached every McDonald’s in Singapore, led by the Spicy Bulgogi Chicken Burger, per Eatbook. Our roundup of new McDonald’s burgers in 2026 follows launches in other markets.
McDonald’s Singapore local menu items in 2026: Curry Potato Chicken Burger from July 9 (S$9.20 single, S$11.20 double), Rendang Curry Beef Burger from July 23 (S$9.50, S$12.30), Curry McShaker Fries from July 9 (+S$1.25), Spicy Bulgogi Chicken Burger from October 1. Burger King localizes too, down to the restaurant level. Our guides to Burger King in Cairo, Burger King in Bandung and Burger King in Kolkata show how the same brand fits different cities.
What the 2026 deals mean for burger fans
For most readers, 2026 brought one new Western brand into a big market (Fatburger in France) and many dated promises elsewhere. The real story is capital: chains are handing whole territories to well-funded local operators and setting 10-year targets.
My take: judge each headline by its status, not its store count. “170 restaurants by 2035” is a contract; “open” is a door you can walk through. Until the Rome Wendy’s or the first Vietnamese Shack opens, the closest you can get is a copycat at home, such as our Son of Baconator copycat recipe or our Triple Whopper with cheese copycat.
FAQ: burger chain international expansion in 2026
Which burger chains expanded internationally in 2026?
Burger King closed a new China joint venture with CPE on February 2, 2026 and extended its UK master franchise to Ireland. Fatburger opened its first French restaurant at Rosny 2 near Paris. Wendy’s (Italy) and Shake Shack (Vietnam, Panama) announced 2026 entries, but none had a verified opening as of October 9, 2026.
When does the first Wendy’s open in Italy, and where?
No Wendy’s had opened in Italy as of October 9, 2026. Milan, the original target, was still in development on September 17, 2026, and a lease has been signed at the Euroma2 shopping center in Rome with an opening expected in autumn 2026.
Why did Burger King give up control of Burger King China?
Under the deal closed on February 2, 2026, CPE invested US$350 million of new capital and took about 83% of Burger King China, while RBI kept about 17%. The partner now funds a plan to grow from about 1,250 restaurants in 2025 to more than 4,000 by 2035 under a 20-year exclusive master franchise.
Is Shake Shack opening in Latin America and Southeast Asia?
Yes, on paper. Shake Shack plans its first Shacks in Panama and Vietnam in 2026 and in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2027. As of October 9, 2026, no opening date or address had been confirmed for Panama or Vietnam.
Is Wendy’s coming to France?
Not yet. Wendy’s lists France among the European markets open to franchise candidates, but no French agreement had been signed as of June 25, 2026.
What is a master franchise?
A master franchise is a long-term contract that gives one company exclusive rights to open and run a brand’s restaurants across a territory, against a store-count target. Burger King China, Burger King UK, Fatburger France and Wendy’s Italy all use this model.
Are burgers the same everywhere at the same chain?
No. Chains run local menus alongside their core burgers. In 2026, McDonald’s Singapore sold a Rendang Curry Beef Burger for S$9.50 from July 23 and launched a Korean-inspired Spicy Bulgogi Chicken Burger on October 1.
