National Cheeseburger Day 2026 Deals: What Each Chain Offered (Ended)
Every National Cheeseburger Day 2026 deal has ended. What McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Five Guys and Shake Shack offered, and why most needed an app.

Every National Cheeseburger Day 2026 deal has ended. The holiday fell on Friday, September 18, 2026, and the offers ran from September 14 to September 20 at the latest. McDonald’s gave rewards members a free Double Cheeseburger with a $1 purchase. Burger King gave Royal Perks members a free Bacon Cheeseburger with a $3 purchase. Five Guys ran a buy-one-get-one with the code BOGOBURGER, and Shake Shack sold a $5 ShackBurger with the code BURGERDAY. Almost every major deal required a loyalty account or an in-app order, and all of them were US-only.
I’m writing this three weeks after the fact, on October 10, 2026. Most deal lists were published before or on the day and still read as if the offers were live. They aren’t. This recap checks each offer against at least one news source, notes where the sources disagree, and says where the deals did not apply. For more fast-food coverage, see our burger news hub.
What is National Cheeseburger Day and when is it?
National Cheeseburger Day is an unofficial American food holiday held every year on September 18. In 2026 it fell on a Friday. It is a US celebration, not an international one, so you won’t see it marketed in most other countries. It is also separate from National Hamburger Day, which falls on May 28. Next year’s date is Saturday, September 18, 2027. Sources: National Today, Fox Business.
National Cheeseburger Day 2026 deals compared, chain by chain
Eleven chains appear in the table below, and seven of them locked the deal behind an app, an online order or a rewards account. I couldn’t read an official press release from any of them, so each offer is attributed to the outlets that reported it: mainly Fox Business (Sophia Compton, September 17, 2026), Sporked (September 13), Money Saving Mom (September 18) and KTTC (September 16).

Bar chart of what you paid for the featured burger on National Cheeseburger Day 2026: $0 at McDonald’s ($1 minimum purchase), Burger King ($3 minimum) and Dairy Queen ($1 minimum), $1 at Smashburger, $1.99 at Wendy’s, $5 at Shake Shack and $8.99 with fries at Applebee’s. All offers have expired, were US only and had conditions. (Chart: Burger Breton, data from Fox Business, Sporked, Money Saving Mom and KTTC (September 2026), rendered with QuickChart)
McDonald’s: a free Double Cheeseburger for MyMcDonald’s Rewards members
McDonald’s offered a free Double Cheeseburger on September 18 only, in the app, to MyMcDonald’s Rewards members who spent at least $1 before tax. According to Slickdeals, which relayed the terms on September 10, it was limited to one per customer, couldn’t be combined with other offers or meals, and didn’t apply at breakfast. Slickdeals is a secondary source, so treat those terms as reported rather than confirmed. McDonald’s told FOX: “Since burgers are kind of our thing, we’d love for fans to come in and grab their favorite McDonald’s drink, snack or meal and add a Double Cheeseburger to celebrate the holiday with us.”
The sources don’t say whether every US restaurant took part. A Slickdeals user asked and got no answer, so I won’t claim that it did. For what’s actually new on the menu this year, see our verified list of new McDonald’s burgers in 2026.
Burger King: a week of Royal Perks offers, peaking with a free Bacon Cheeseburger
Burger King gave Royal Perks members a free Bacon Cheeseburger in the app on September 18, with a $3 minimum purchase. Fox Business also confirms the next two days. Members got 4 Chicken Nuggets on September 19 and an Original Chicken Sandwich on September 20, each with a $3 purchase.

Aggregators described offers for September 14 to 17 as well: a Rodeo Burger, a buy-one-get-one Whopper Jr., a Croissan’wich and a Hamburger. QSR Magazine’s report on that week wouldn’t load for me (HTTP 403). Only September 18 to 20 is confirmed by Fox Business, so I’m treating the earlier days as unverified. For the chain’s 2026 menu changes, read our guide to the new Burger King Whopper and every 2026 launch.
Wendy’s: a $1.99 Dave’s Single, plus a separate Grubhub Baconator
According to Fox Business, Wendy’s Rewards members could add a Dave’s Single to any order for $1.99, in the app or online, at participating US restaurants. Sporked and Money Saving Mom reported a different offer: a free Baconator on Grubhub orders of $20 or more on September 18. That was a promotion run by the delivery platform, not the Wendy’s Rewards deal. The two offers seem to have been separate, but no source confirms it.
One more warning: a “free Dave’s Single all September” offer still circulates online. Its source (WJLA) gives no 2026 date, so I’ve left it out. If you’d rather build the bacon version at home, here’s our Son of Baconator copycat recipe.
Five Guys: BOGOBURGER worked online only
Five Guys ran a buy-one-get-one burger deal with the code BOGOBURGER from September 16 to 18. The second burger had to be of equal or lesser value. The deal was 100% digital, through the Five Guys app and website. According to KTTC and Fox Business, it didn’t work in restaurants, on third-party delivery apps or on scheduled orders. If you missed it, you can make a Five Guys Little Hamburger at home.

Dairy Queen, Shake Shack, Carl’s Jr., Smashburger and Whataburger
Dairy Queen gave DQ Rewards members a free Single Original Cheeseburger Signature Stackburger from September 14 to 18 on app or online orders of $1 or more. It was limited to one per customer at participating locations and couldn’t be combined with other offers. Our Dairy Queen Original Stackburger copycat recreates it.
Shake Shack sold a single ShackBurger or Cheeseburger for $5 with any purchase on September 18, using the code BURGERDAY. It worked in the app, online or at in-store kiosks. That made it one of the few code deals you could use in person. Here’s our ShackBurger copycat recipe to make it at home.

Carl’s Jr. took half off any burger when you bought a Hand-Scooped Ice-Cream Shake, for Carl’s Jr. Rewards members in the app. Smashburger sold any single burger for $1 to loyalty members ordering in the app.
Whataburger gave away a Whataburger Jr. with the purchase of medium fries or onion rings. Money Saving Mom names it the Bacon & Cheese Whataburger Jr. and says it was for loyalty members only. Sporked doesn’t mention that restriction. For the full-size version, try our Triple Meat Whataburger copycat.
Applebee’s, 7-Eleven and the single-source deals
Applebee’s sold a Classic Burger or Classic Cheeseburger with fries for $8.99, dine-in or takeout. 7-Eleven sold a $6 combo with a 20 oz soda and an Angus Double Cheeseburger, Chicken Sandwich or Philly Cheesesteak. Only Fox Business reported the 7-Eleven deal.
Sporked alone listed several smaller offers:
- Wayback Burgers: Single Cheeseburger for $3.50, limit 2 per person
- Krystal: two free burgers with a $5 app purchase
- Ruby Tuesday: burger with sides for $6.99
- Farmer Boys: Big Cheese for $3.99 for members
- Denny’s: second burger 50% off
Deals I left out: Buffalo Wild Wings and Red Robin
I left Buffalo Wild Wings and Red Robin out of the table because their sources contradict each other. Fox Business describes Buffalo Wild Wings’ deal as a free cheeseburger with a full-price cheeseburger, but also calls it a BOGO. Fox Business says Red Robin was giving away 400 digital gift cards on Instagram and Facebook. Sporked and Money Saving Mom list combos from $9.99 instead. Without a primary source, I won’t pick a version.
Why the apps were at the center of National Cheeseburger Day
Chains used National Cheeseburger Day to sign people up for their apps. McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Dairy Queen, Carl’s Jr. and Smashburger all required a rewards account or an in-app order for their headline deal. Five Guys went further and refused the code at the counter. The free burger was the hook. The account you created to claim it is what the chain keeps.
The numbers show why. As I reported in our Burger Value Wars 2026 analysis, loyalty programs pay off more than value menus. McDonald’s had 220 million 90-day active loyalty users across 70 markets (+13%) at the end of June 2026. Those members generated about $40 billion in sales over 12 months (+20%). Wendy’s and Burger King publish no comparable global figure.
For the chain, a free cheeseburger that costs the customer $1 in purchases is a small price for a permanent spot on their phone. My take: these were customer-acquisition campaigns dressed up as a food holiday. Fine if you already use the apps. A bad trade if you downloaded three of them to save $10.
If I had to name the best deal of the day, it was Shake Shack’s: $5 for a ShackBurger, no account, and a code that worked at the kiosk. Five Guys gave away more burger, but only to people already ordering two online.
As of October 10, 2026, no chain has published results for the day. There are no figures on burgers given away, app downloads or new rewards sign-ups, so I’m not going to guess at the impact.
How a National Cheeseburger Day app deal worked: download the app, create a rewards account, add the offer to your order, meet the $1 to $3 minimum purchase, get the free burger. Five Guys accepted its code only in the app or on its website. (Diagram: Burger Breton, rendered with QuickChart Graphviz)
Did the deals apply in Canada, the UK or Europe?
No. Every National Cheeseburger Day 2026 deal in this recap applied only in the United States. I found no Canadian offer for 2026 that I could confirm. The Canadian deals still circulating online are either from past years or undated. One example is a $1 Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger from Wendy’s Canada, which dates from 2024 (todocanada.ca, September 11, 2024). In France and the rest of Europe, I found no National Cheeseburger Day 2026 promotion from McDonald’s, Burger King or any other chain as of October 10, 2026.
Who invented the cheeseburger?
Nobody knows for sure, because three American cities each claim the cheeseburger. Pasadena, California credits Lionel Sternberger at the Rite Spot, with dates given as 1924 or 1926. Louisville, Kentucky credits Kaelin’s restaurant in 1934. Denver, Colorado credits Louis Ballast at the Humpty Dumpty Drive-In, who is said to have trademarked the name “cheeseburger” in 1935. Several historians say no trademark record has ever been found, so treat all three as claims rather than settled facts. Sources: Gov1, National Today.
Map of the United States showing the three claims to the first cheeseburger: Pasadena, California (Rite Spot, 1924 or 1926), Louisville, Kentucky (Kaelin’s, 1934) and Denver, Colorado (Humpty Dumpty Drive-In, 1935). How I put this recap together
I worked only from dated, published sources, all checked on October 10, 2026: Fox Business and its FOX TV Stations affiliate FOX 9, Sporked, Money Saving Mom, KTTC and Slickdeals. An offer went into the table when an outlet reported it with dates and terms. If only one outlet reported it, I say so. If outlets disagreed on a detail, such as Whataburger’s loyalty requirement, I kept the offer and flagged the gap. If they disagreed on what the deal even was, as with Buffalo Wild Wings and Red Robin, I left it out. I couldn’t read a press release from any chain’s newsroom, so every offer is attributed to the outlet that reported it rather than presented as confirmed by the brand.
National Cheeseburger Day 2026 FAQ
When is National Cheeseburger Day?
National Cheeseburger Day is September 18 every year in the United States. In 2026 it fell on a Friday. In 2027 it falls on a Saturday.
Which chains gave away a free cheeseburger on September 18, 2026?
McDonald’s (a Double Cheeseburger with a $1 purchase), Burger King (a Bacon Cheeseburger with a $3 purchase) and Dairy Queen (a Single Original Cheeseburger Signature Stackburger with a $1 purchase) gave away free cheeseburgers. Each required a rewards account and an app or online order. Whataburger gave away a Whataburger Jr. with the purchase of medium fries or onion rings. All of these offers have ended.
Did you need the McDonald’s app to get the free Double Cheeseburger?
Yes. The offer was for MyMcDonald’s Rewards members, redeemed in the app on September 18, 2026, with a $1 minimum purchase before tax. According to Slickdeals, it was limited to one per customer and excluded breakfast.
What is Burger King Royal Perks and how did the deal work?
Royal Perks is Burger King’s US loyalty program, used through its app. On National Cheeseburger Day, members got a free Bacon Cheeseburger with a $3 purchase. Members then got 4 Chicken Nuggets on September 19 and an Original Chicken Sandwich on September 20, each also with a $3 purchase.
Did the Five Guys BOGOBURGER code work in restaurants or on delivery apps?
No. BOGOBURGER only worked on Five Guys app and website orders from September 16 to 18, 2026. It was excluded in restaurants, on third-party delivery apps and on scheduled orders.
Is National Cheeseburger Day celebrated in Canada or Europe?
It’s an American holiday, not a worldwide one. I found no 2026 promotion that I could confirm in Canada, and none from any chain in France or elsewhere in Europe as of October 10, 2026.
What’s the difference between National Hamburger Day and National Cheeseburger Day?
National Hamburger Day is May 28 and celebrates the burger in general. National Cheeseburger Day is September 18 and is specifically about the cheeseburger. Both are unofficial US food holidays.
Why do fast-food chains save their best deals for app users?
An app account lets a chain market to you again and again. At McDonald’s, 220 million active loyalty users generated about $40 billion in member sales over 12 months to June 2026. A free burger is a cheap way to grow that base.
