Fast Food Items Coming Back in 2026: Every Retro Burger, Dated
Every fast food burger coming back in 2026, dated by market: Boomer King, Wendy's Pretzel Bacon Pub, McExtreme. Real trend or retro marketing?

Eight fast food burger comebacks happened in 2026, across four countries. In date order: the Whataburger Monterey Melt (from December 30, 2025), McDonald’s France’s six-item “Mercato des Légendes” with the Triple Cheeseburger (January 13 to February 9), Burger King Spain’s mini “Baby Burgers” (February 3), the McRib in Spain (summer), Burger King France’s “Boomer King” menu (July 21), Wendy’s Pretzel Bacon Pub Cheeseburger (August 3), three World Cup burgers at McDonald’s Argentina (late September) and the McExtreme Intense Cheddar in Spain (October 9). All of them are limited-time offers. Almost none is an old recipe rebuilt from scratch: the chains took existing builds back off the shelf.
I built this timeline from brand announcements and trade press in the United States, France, Spain and Argentina, last checked on October 10, 2026. Every fact below names its source. Where a chain never published a price or an end date, I say so rather than guess.

US fast food comebacks: Wendy’s and Whataburger
In the US, the two burger comebacks of 2026 were Wendy’s Pretzel Bacon Pub Cheeseburger, chosen by a customer vote, and Whataburger’s Monterey Melt, back for a limited time to kick off the year. Lists from Food Republic cover many more returning items, but very few of them are burgers.
Wendy’s Pretzel Bacon Pub Cheeseburger return: back since August 3
Wendy’s brought back the Pretzel Bacon Pub Cheeseburger on August 3, 2026, after it won the chain’s “Bring It Back Bracket” fan vote (Nation’s Restaurant News, QSR Web). Voting opened on March 30, 2026 with eight finalists, including the Bacon Portabella Melt and the Dreamsicle Frosty. According to Sporked, the Pretzel Bacon Pub took about 74% of the vote; I found no second source for that figure.
The build is a quarter-pound beef patty with muenster, bacon, beer cheese sauce, fried onions and pickles on a pretzel bun. A chicken version is also on the menu. Wendy’s has not published an end date, and I could not confirm a national price.

Whataburger Monterey Melt: back from December 30, 2025
Whataburger brought back the Monterey Melt for a limited time from December 30, 2025, alongside the Chicken Fajita Taco, to open 2026 (KSAT, The National Provisioner). It stacks two beef patties, Monterey Jack and American cheese, grilled onions and peppers, and Jalapeño Ranch sauce.
This is a serial comeback. The Monterey Melt debuted as a limited-time offer in 2013 and joined the permanent menu late that year (QSR Web). It had already returned on January 7, 2025, for the 75th anniversary of the chain, founded in 1950 (Whataburger Stories). If you are planning a visit, my Whataburger Houston guide covers which location to pick, the menu and hours. The 2026 end date has not been announced.

Retro burgers in France: Boomer King and McDonald’s Mercato
France ran the two most openly nostalgic operations of the year: Burger King’s TV-themed Boomer King menu and McDonald’s soccer-themed Mercato des Légendes.
What is Burger King’s Boomer King menu?
The Boomer King is a limited-edition Burger King France menu launched on July 21, 2026 in more than 600 restaurants, sold while stocks last (L’Express Franchise, Monsieur Vintage). You pick one of 10 burgers, including the Whopper, Big King, CBK, Steakhouse and Big Fish. Each menu comes with a random collectible: a Charmed mug, a Beverly Hills 90210 glass, a Knight Rider T-shirt or Saved by the Bell socks.

The menu also brought back two discontinued items: Canada Dry soda and the King Fusion Galak, a white chocolate ice cream dessert. The agency Buzzman created the campaign under the slogan “3615 Code Nostalgie”, a nod to France’s pre-internet Minitel service. It was directed by the Samouraïs collective, produced by Boner & Boner, and aimed at 30- to 40-year-olds who grew up on ’80s and ’90s TV. The chain runs through about 170 franchisees, each operating three to four restaurants (L’Express Franchise, single source).

McDonald’s France Mercato des Légendes: six items, four weeks
McDonald’s France brought back six products from January 13 to February 9, 2026 under the name “Mercato des Légendes” (e-marketing.fr, McDonald’s France). The lineup:
- Big Mac Chicken, also offered with bacon
- Triple Cheeseburger
- Wavy Fries
- McFlurry Oreo
- Sprite Green Apple
- Big Mac sauce

The idea borrowed from soccer’s transfer window, or “mercato”. BBDO Paris tied it to the winter transfer window of France’s top league, Ligue 1 McDonald’s, with LED stadium boards on matchday 17 (January 3 and 4, 2026) showing former players Javier Pastore, Basile Boli, Ludovic Giuly, Jean-Claude Darcheville and Rio Mavuba. The operation was scheduled to end on February 9, and I found no published prices.
Burger comebacks in Spain and Argentina
Spain had three retro burger moves in 2026 and Argentina one, all built on recipes the brands already owned.
McRib and McExtreme Intense Cheddar at McDonald’s Spain
McDonald’s Spain brought the McRib back in summer 2026 inside a limited “McMenú Mitiquísimo” with a campaign starring TV personality Ana Obregón, according to Directo al Paladar (July 9, 2026, single source). The exact return date, price and duration were not disclosed.

On October 9, 2026, McDonald’s Spain relaunched the McExtreme Intense Cheddar: beef, crispy bacon bits and cheddar, sold under the line “Demasiado queso, demasiado sabor” (“Too much cheese, too much flavor”). CMO Álvaro Miguel framed the return as a response to customer feedback (Marketing News). Price and duration have not been confirmed.

Burger King Spain’s Baby Burgers
Burger King Spain launched “Baby Burgers” on February 3, 2026: mini versions of the Whopper, Steakhouse and Big King, with a campaign by DAVID Madrid (Periódico Publicidad). Marketing director Yvette Altet described it as “reinterpreting our great classics”. It is less a comeback than a resize of icons that never left.

McDonald’s Argentina revives its World Cup burgers
McDonald’s Argentina put three burgers from its 2026 World Cup edition, the McAlvarez, McFernández and McAllister, back on sale for a limited time in late September 2026, during the FIFA international window (iProfesional, September 29, 2026, single source). It shows how short the nostalgia cycle has become: a few months is enough to call something a comeback.

Nostalgia food trend 2026: forecast vs. reality
The nostalgia food trend of 2026 was forecast by analysts, and chains did launch retro burgers, but no published data shows that nostalgia increased burger sales this year.

|---|---|---|
| What | Mintel’s “Retro Rejuvenation” trend; Food Business News on nostalgia, comfort and flavor escapism | Eight dated burger comebacks in the US, France, Spain and Argentina |
| When | Mintel: October 8, 2025 | December 30, 2025 to October 9, 2026 |
| Claim | Consumers seek refuge in an idealized vision of a simpler past | Brands brought back existing recipes for limited runs |

Mintel’s 2026 Food and Drink Predictions, released October 8, 2025, describe “Retro Rejuvenation” as consumers looking for comfort in an idealized past. Food Business News ranks nostalgia, comfort and flavor escapism among the big culinary trends for 2026 and cites the smash burger as nostalgic comfort food. Tasting Table covers the same childhood-nostalgia mood, mostly outside burgers. These are forecasts and observations, not market results.
Retro recipes or retro marketing? My verdict
Most 2026 comebacks are retro marketing wrapped around unchanged recipes. Only Wendy’s let customers pick the burger, and showed the vote. I base that on how each operation worked, not on sales data: nobody has published any.
Look at what actually changed. Burger King France kept its current burgers and put the nostalgia into TV merch, Canada Dry and an old dessert. McDonald’s France used soccer legends to sell six items its kitchens already knew. Whataburger has now brought back the same Monterey Melt twice in under a year. McDonald’s Spain says the McExtreme returned because customers asked, but it showed no vote and no figure. Wendy’s is the exception: customers chose the burger, and the bracket itself became the campaign.
I don’t hold that against the chains. A proven recipe is a low-risk bet, and “it’s back” is the easiest pitch in fast food. But calling it a culinary trend overstates it. The burgers did not change; the stories around them did. If I had to name the one comeback that earned its return, it is the Pretzel Bacon Pub, the only one where the burger, not the packaging, won the argument. Which Wendy’s burger did customers vote back in 2026?
