6 Ballygunge Place is Kolkata’s best-known Bengali restaurant. It was founded in 2003 by three former colleagues from The Park Hotel: Chef Sushanta Sengupta, Swaminathan Ramani and Aninda Palit. The flagship fills a restored Raj-era bungalow at 6 Dr Amiya Bose Sarani Road, Ballygunge Place, and opens daily for lunch and dinner. Expect about ₹1,000 for two. There is no burger on the menu. Come for daab chingri and shorshe ilish instead.
Who founded 6 Ballygunge Place?
6 Ballygunge Place was founded in 2003 by Swaminathan Ramani, Aninda Palit and Chef Sushanta Sengupta, through Savourites Hospitality Pvt Ltd, the company they had set up in 1998. All three had worked together at The Park Hotel in Kolkata. Their starting point was simple: a visitor who wanted a proper Bengali meal had nowhere to sit down and order one (Wikipedia; official site).
They split the work by skill, according to Business Standard in 2011 and Wikipedia. Sengupta took the kitchen. Ramani took sales and marketing, and Palit food and beverage. No recent source confirms that Palit is still involved.
Sushanta Sengupta, the founding chef
Sushanta Sengupta is the founding director and chef of Savourites Hospitality, the group behind 6 Ballygunge Place. A 2017 Restaurant India profile says he graduated from IHM Kolkata in 1993 and trained with the Taj in Delhi. He then became Senior Sous Chef at Zen, the oriental restaurant at The Park in Kolkata (Restaurant India, 2017).
Bengali food is only half his story. The same profile credits him with launching The Wall, billed as Kolkata’s first pan-Asian restaurant serving authentic Japanese food, and with co-creating 6 Ballygunge Place Thali, presented as the first quick-service format for Bengali cuisine.
One caveat. That 2017 profile is the latest detailed one I found, and the 2024 coverage of the Delhi opening quotes only S. Ramani. Sengupta is the founding chef. Whether he still runs the pass every night, I can’t confirm.
Chef Sushanta Sengupta’s career at a glance: IHM Kolkata graduate (1993), trained with the Taj in Delhi, Senior Sous Chef at Zen at The Park in Kolkata, co-founder of Savourites Hospitality (1998), 6 Ballygunge Place (2003) and 6 Ballygunge Place Thali (2013). The story: a trademarked address and old Bengali cookbooks
Two things set 6 Ballygunge Place apart: its name is a registered trademark, and its menu grew out of historical research. The restaurant says it was the first retail outlet in India to register its address as a trademark. The name is literally where the first dining room stands.
The building is a former Rai Bahadur’s bungalow, restored in its Raj-era style. The menu draws on Pragya Sundari Devi’s early Bengali cookbook and on food references in Vaishnav literature (official site). You can feel it on the page. The menu is organised by river fish and household dishes, not by the butter chicken and naan of a standard Indian restaurant.

Timeline of 6 Ballygunge Place
The brand grew in three stages: a single bungalow in 2003, a quick-service Thali format in 2013 and its first branch outside West Bengal in 2024.
| Year | Milestone | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 1998 | Savourites Hospitality Pvt Ltd set up | Official site |
| 2003 | 6 Ballygunge Place opens in Ballygunge, Kolkata | Official site, Wikipedia |
| 19 June 2013 | First 6 Ballygunge Place Thali opens at Behala A.C. Market (1,200 sq ft, about 50 seats) | Retail4Growth |
| September 2024 | Malviya Nagar, New Delhi opens, the first branch outside West Bengal | The Week |
That first Behala Thali has since dropped off the official outlet list. The expansion talk has been louder than the openings: London and Manhattan were announced in 2011, then Gurugram, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Bengaluru in 2024. None of them is on the official list, so I treat them as unconfirmed.

Restaurant, Thali or Takeaway: what’s the difference?
The full-service restaurants serve the à la carte menu at the table. The Thali outlets serve fixed set plates in a quick-service format, and the Takeaway counters sell food to go. The 4 Thali outlets are in Kasba, Salt Lake Sector V, Jodhpur Park and Kamalgazi. My advice: if you have one meal in Kolkata, make it a long lunch at the bungalow. A Thali is the cheap, fast introduction, and Takeaway is for a hotel-room dinner.
The same group’s other restaurants
Savourites Hospitality runs three sister brands in Kolkata: The Bengal Lounge (6 Netaji Subhas Road, BBD Bagh), Ramanee (P569 Lake Terrace) and The Wall (31 Dr Sarat Banerjee Road), Sengupta’s pan-Asian project.
6 Ballygunge Place signature dishes: what to order
For a first visit, order daab chingri, shorshe ilish and kosha mangsho, and finish with mishti doi. The restaurant and Wikipedia both single these out as its signatures.
- Daab chingri: prawns cooked and served inside a tender green coconut, the restaurant’s best-known plate.
- Shorshe ilish: hilsa in mustard sauce. Hilsa is the fish Bengal argues about most, and it is full of fine bones, so eat slowly.
- Chingri malai curry: prawns in a coconut-milk curry.
- Kosha mangsho: slow-cooked, dry-style mutton.
- Paturi: fish steamed in a banana leaf.
- Mochar ghonto: banana flower cooked as a vegetable dish.
- Fish Fry with kasundi: a breaded, deep-fried fish fillet with Bengali mustard relish.
- Desserts: mishti doi (sweet set yogurt), payesh (rice pudding) and sandesh (fresh cheese sweet).

The menu runs from starters to mains (vegetables, prawns, crab, hilsa, katla, pabda, shutki or dried fish, mutton, pulao and breads), then desserts and mocktails. Cocktails are served only at the Ecosuite (New Town) and Chowringhee branches (official menu; EazyDiner).

Why a Bengali restaurant on a burger site?
Because you can’t understand what Kolkata wants from a burger without its fried snacks. The Fish Fry with kasundi is a breaded fillet with a sharp mustard relish, and that pairing shows up again in the city’s burger joints.

I’ll be blunt, though: 6 Ballygunge Place is not part of Kolkata’s burger scene, and I won’t dress it up as one. Go for the Bengali food. For burgers, start with our Kolkata restaurant guide and our Burger King Kolkata addresses and hours. For how a patty ended up in a bun in the first place, read our history of the hamburger.
In Delhi: the Malviya Nagar branch
Yes, there is a 6 Ballygunge Place in Delhi. It opened in Malviya Nagar in September 2024, the brand’s first branch outside West Bengal. The Week reported that Bank of India financed the outlet, that meat is flown in from Kolkata every three days and that the poppy seeds are stone-ground (The Week, 16 October 2024; Outlook Traveller). In the capital for burgers? Our best burgers in New Delhi guide has you covered, and on the west coast so does our best burgers in Mumbai.
How I built this profile
I did not visit for this piece, and there is no rating here for that reason. I built it from the restaurant’s official about, outlet and menu pages, from Wikipedia and from dated press coverage: Business Standard (2011), Retail4Growth (2013), Restaurant India (2017) and The Week (2024). The Business Standard article returned an error on 11 October 2026, so the founders’ roles rely on its search summary and on Wikipedia. Hours, prices for two and diner ratings come from EazyDiner. I checked every source on 11 October 2026 and left out anything I couldn’t confirm: dish prices, awards, closed branches and announced expansions. Browse more profiles in our Restaurants section.
