BurgerFuel Dunedin: Hours, Menu, Prices, Address
Dunedin has one BurgerFuel, at 695 Great King Street in North Dunedin. Here are its hours, what to order, what it costs in NZD and what customers say.

BurgerFuel has one restaurant in Dunedin: BurgerFuel Dunedin North, at 695 Great King Street, Dunedin North, Dunedin 9016 (phone +64 3 470 1295). It opens at 9am every day and closes at 10pm Sunday to Wednesday, 11pm on Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday. Burgers on the national menu cost from about NZ$9 to NZ$22.50, and the store holds a 4.8/5 Google rating from 860 reviews.
My short verdict: this is the safest late-night burger in the student quarter, and the easiest place to feed a group with vegans or gluten-free eaters in it. If you want a burger you can only get in Dunedin, go elsewhere. I checked every detail here on BurgerFuel’s official store locator and on Wanderlog on 17 October 2026.
One caveat up front. This is a desk-research guide: I haven’t eaten at this branch yet, so it carries no Burger Breton rating, and every fact below comes from the sources cited. For the city’s independent burger bars, see our guide to the best burgers in Dunedin.

North Dunedin is scarfie territory: Otago’s students live, eat and stay up late here. Great King Street is one of the main roads in and out of the city, and BurgerFuel calls it “a hospitality mecca”. Fast food got there first. In July 2021 the Otago Daily Times reported that Taco Bell was coming to 644 Great King Street, on the site of the old Couplands bakery (28 July 2021).
Searching for “BurgerFuel Great King Street”? Same restaurant. Dunedin North is its official name in the BurgerFuel app and on the website.
BurgerFuel Dunedin opening hours
BurgerFuel Dunedin is open seven days a week from 9am, until 10pm Sunday to Wednesday, 11pm on Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday. These are the hours on the official store locator, checked on 17 October 2026, and Wanderlog lists the same ones.
| Day | Opening hours |
|---|---|
| Monday | 9am – 10pm |
| Tuesday | 9am – 10pm |
| Wednesday | 9am – 10pm |
| Thursday | 9am – 11pm |
| Friday | 9am – midnight |
| Saturday | 9am – midnight |
| Sunday | 9am – 10pm |
One detail surprised me. Every store in our BurgerFuel Wellington guide opens at 10am, yet the Dunedin listing says 9am, every day. I found no breakfast menu for this branch. Planning an early visit? Call first.
The late close matters more. On a Friday or Saturday you can still order a made-to-order burger here at 11.30pm, right when a student neighbourhood gets hungry.
Services: dine in, takeaway, online ordering
BurgerFuel Dunedin North serves dine-in and takeaway customers and takes orders online through BurgerFuel’s own platform. You order at the counter: no table service, no bookings.
- Dine in: the brand says the restaurant is “one of the system’s largest with a generous seating area”.
- Takeaway: order at the counter, or online ahead of time.
- Online ordering: through BurgerFuel’s platform, eat.burgerfuel.com, and the BurgerFuel app.
- Bookings: none. It’s a counter-serve restaurant.
- Drive-through: none listed for this store.
- Loyalty: BurgerFuel’s VIB Club loyalty programme.
Delivery is the one gap I couldn’t close. BurgerFuel works with third-party apps such as Uber Eats in some locations, but no official source says which apps deliver from the Dunedin store. Open Uber Eats, DoorDash or Delivereasy, enter your address and see.
Nothing has been published about parking, wheelchair access, payment methods or nearby bus routes for this branch, so I won’t guess.
BurgerFuel Dunedin menu: what to order
The Dunedin menu is BurgerFuel’s national menu: burgers made to order, many named after cars, plus aïoli fries, kūmara fries and thickshakes. I found no item exclusive to Dunedin when I searched on 17 October 2026.
The signature: the Bastard
Order the Bastard on a first visit. It’s BurgerFuel’s signature burger: beef, cheddar, bacon, beetroot with chia seeds, mango, avocado, tomato relish and aïoli. Beetroot and mango are what separate it from any other bacon cheeseburger, and they’re also what splits the reviews (more on that below).

The car-themed range
Most of the beef and chicken burgers carry car names, in keeping with the brand’s motoring theme. On the board you’ll find:
- Ring Burner
- American Muscle, sold in two sizes
- Parmageddon
- Peanut Piston, which reviewers describe as a limited edition. Check it’s still on before you set your heart on it.
Sides and drinks
The sides people talk about are the fries with BurgerFuel’s house aïoli and the kūmara fries, made from New Zealand sweet potato. Dunedin reviewers also mention the Chicken Fenders with chipotle aïoli. Thickshakes and sodas complete the menu.
Sweet potato fries with dipping sauces, the kind of side BurgerFuel serves as kūmara fries with aïoli (about NZ$7.90). Illustrative photo, not taken at BurgerFuel. Vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and low-carb options
BurgerFuel Dunedin offers vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free and low-carb options, according to the brand’s opening announcement. Meat-free burgers on the national menu include the V8 Vegan, the Combustion Tofu, the VTEC and the Vege Pinto.
The brand says it uses 100% grass-fed New Zealand beef and free-range chicken. I couldn’t find any published halal certification for the Dunedin store. If you need it, ask the staff.
This, to me, is the strongest case for BurgerFuel in Dunedin: a table with a vegan, a gluten-free eater and a beef fan can all order off the same board.
BurgerFuel Dunedin prices
A BurgerFuel burger in New Zealand costs from NZ$9.00 for a Hamburgini Cheese to NZ$22.50 for a Parmageddon. Fries run NZ$6.90 to NZ$7.90 and a thickshake NZ$8.90 to NZ$9.90. These come from an unofficial national price list updated on 15 July 2026 (fastfoodsmenu.com), the same source as our BurgerFuel Wellington guide.
| Item | Price (NZD) |
|---|---|
| Hamburgini Cheese | $9.00 |
| Combustion Tofu | $13.90 |
| American Muscle | $15.00 / $21.00 |
| VTEC | $17.90 |
| Ring Burner | $18.90 |
| Bastard | $20.90 |
| Parmageddon | $22.50 |
| Fries with aïoli | $6.90 |
| Kūmara fries | $7.90 |
| Thickshake | $8.90 – $9.90 |
| Soft drink | $5.00 |
BurgerFuel New Zealand burger prices in NZD, from the NZ$9.00 Hamburgini Cheese to the NZ$22.50 Parmageddon, with the signature Bastard at NZ$20.90. Unofficial national list updated 15 July 2026, not confirmed for Dunedin. Treat these as a guide, not as Dunedin’s till prices: the ordering site hides prices until you sign in, so I couldn’t confirm them for this branch. On that list, a Bastard with kūmara fries and a soft drink comes to about NZ$33.80. That’s sit-down money for a counter-service meal. You’re paying for the late hours and the consistency as much as for the beef.
BurgerFuel Dunedin reviews
BurgerFuel Dunedin North has a 4.8/5 Google rating from 860 reviews, as shown on Wanderlog on 17 October 2026. Wanderlog doesn’t date its data, so check Google Maps for the current figure.
What reviewers keep praising, according to Wanderlog’s summary:
- Friendly, attentive staff, with the owner often on site.
- Generous portions and good-quality ingredients.
- Original burgers, made to order.
- Fast service, even at peak times.
- Good value overall, even though it isn’t cheap.
What they keep criticising:
- Prices that some find high.
- Delays on online orders.
- Mixed feelings about how the beetroot is done, which matters if you order the Bastard.
Wanderlog puts a typical visit at 15 to 45 minutes. I’ve left out the TripAdvisor and Restaurant Guru rankings: TripAdvisor’s page was blocked and showed no review count, and Restaurant Guru gives two different rankings for the same restaurant.
The history of BurgerFuel in Dunedin
BurgerFuel opened in Dunedin in April 2023, announcing its 61st restaurant on 3 April 2023. It came after Rolleston in Canterbury, opened in October 2022, as the chain pushed further into the South Island.
The franchisee is Varun, who moved down from Auckland. He has spent more than 11 years with BurgerFuel: first on the crew at BurgerFuel Ponsonby, then as an Area Manager at head office, where he opened restaurants in New Zealand and overseas. General Manager Jason Lowery said at the opening: “Dunedin has been a focus of ours for many years, so to see it come to life and with a Franchisee that comes from a BurgerFuel Operations background, who is as passionate as Varun, is the perfect result.” (BurgerFuel)
BurgerFuel, a New Zealand burger chain
BurgerFuel is a New Zealand burger chain founded in October 1995 by Chris Mason in Ponsonby, Auckland. It has been listed on the NZX since 2007 under the code BFG (Wikipedia). As of 31 March 2026 it had 62 restaurants in New Zealand, and Burger Fuel Group reported a record net profit of NZ$1,968,937 for FY26 (FilingReader, 30 June 2026).

BurgerFuel or an independent burger in Dunedin?
Go to BurgerFuel for a late feed, a vegan or gluten-free burger you can count on, or the same burger you’d get in Auckland. Go independent when you want something only Dunedin serves. That’s where I’d spend my money on a first trip.
My pick is No.7 Balmac in Dunedin, and that guide also points to Good Good and Re:Burger. The local scene is shifting, too. Velvet Burger, the chain started by four Dunedin locals, closed its original Octagon restaurant on Lower Stuart Street in June 2026 after 20 years (Otago Daily Times, 7 June 2026). For every option in town, start from our Dunedin burger hub.
Driving the South Island? Other BurgerFuel stores on the official locator include Rolleston (2/4 Rōhutu Way), Spitfire Square and Sydenham in Christchurch, and Timaru (6/9 Elizabeth Street). For independent burgers along the way, see our Christchurch burger guide and our Queenstown burger guide, or browse every city in the Restaurants section.
