Best burgers in Mumbai: a double smash burger with two smashed patties, melted cheddar and fries

The best burgers in Mumbai in 2026 are at Good Flippin’ Burgers in Bandra, Mag St., Woodside Inn and Jimis Burger. If you want the one burger you will still talk about a week later, go to Cafe Universal in Fort for the five-patty OMG Burger. Know this before you order: Maharashtra has banned cow beef since 5 March 2015, so every “beef” burger in Mumbai is water buffalo, sold as “buff”. Below are the 10 burger restaurants in Mumbai I would send a friend to, each with a full address, its signature burger and a dated price.

Why beef burgers in Mumbai are made with buffalo (“buff”)

A beef burger in Mumbai is a buff burger: the patty is water-buffalo meat, because cow beef is illegal in the state. The Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act took effect on 5 March 2015. It bans the slaughter and possession of cow, bull and bullock meat, but water buffalo stays legal (Al Jazeera, Quartz).

So when a menu here says “beef”, “tenderloin” or plain “buff”, it means buffalo. The meat is leaner than the beef most visitors grew up on. That, to my mind, is why the kitchens that handle it best smash it thin, stack it double or lean hard on the cheese.

How I ranked the best burger restaurants in Mumbai

I built this ranking from sources I could check, cross-referenced on 26 September 2026: restaurant websites and store pages, Mumbai food press (LBB, Curly Tales, Finely Chopped, Homegrown, Bhukkad Company), trade press, and the ratings and review counts on magicpin and on each brand’s own store pages. A place only made the list if it has a current address and a listing that shows it is still trading.

Closed venues are out. That rules out Burgs in Bandra and Cafe Zoe in Lower Parel, plus names that still sit on older lists, such as Salt Water Cafe and Indigo Deli. I also dropped Between Breads in Pali Hill: I found no review from 2025 or 2026. Prices come from listings of different dates, so each one below says where it came from and when. Check the menu before you go.

The 10 best burger restaurants in Mumbai

1. Good Flippin’ Burgers, Pali Hill, Bandra West

Good Flippin’ Burgers is the best all-round burger in Mumbai: a buff smash burger that grew from one Bandra delivery kitchen into a national chain. Sijo Mathew, Sid Marchant and Viren D’Silva started it in 2019 (Good Flippin’ story). Seven years on, it has 67 outlets, 30 of them in Mumbai, with more in Delhi NCR, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai, backed by a USD 4 million Series A round (Restaurant India).

Order the Classic. Two buffalo patties, two slices of cheddar, truffle mayo and lettuce on a brioche bun, for INR 365. Of the signature burgers with a published price here, only Hearsch’s is cheaper, and that value is a big part of why it tops my list. The brioche matters: it stays soft against the crisp edges of a smashed patty, and Clara’s homemade brioche burger buns recipe shows how to bake the same style at home. With a full veg range, it is also the easy call for a mixed group.

  • Address: Shop No. 3, Ground Floor, Gasper Enclave, Dr. Ambedkar Road, Pali Hill, Bandra West, Mumbai 400050
  • Hours: daily, 11 am to 2 am
  • Rating: 4.7 stars from 1,505 reviews on the brand’s own store page (September 2026)

2. Mag St., Bandra West

Mag St. is where I would book a table for a smash burger in Mumbai, with a real menu and a drinks list around it. The dish reviewers single out is the double smash buff burger. Mag St. belongs to Food Matters Group, the company Gauri Devidayal and Jay Yousuf also run The Table through, and the food blog Finely Chopped puts the smash burger right next to the lobster roll and the steak.

This is a restaurant with a great burger, not a burger counter. That is the point: bring the friend who wants the lobster roll. Outlets in Colaba, Lower Parel and Bandra.

3. Woodside Inn, Colaba

Woodside Inn is Mumbai’s burger institution, and July is the month to go, when its Beer & Burger Festival takes over. The 18th edition ran from 7 to 27 July 2025 across Colaba, Bandra and Andheri (India Food Network). The 19th, in July 2026, took a “Bazaar Binge” theme built on 14 world food markets and was the first to reach Bengaluru (What’s Around Bangalore).

Pankil Shah, Abhishek Honawar and Sumit Gambhir founded it. In October 2023 they launched Woodside Burger Shop, a delivery-only spin-off (Restaurant India), and that is where the Signature Triple Tenderloin Smash lives, next to a Chimichurri Grilled Chicken burger and a Goan Pork Chorizo burger. The chorizo is the one I would order first. It is the most local-tasting idea on any menu in this guide.

4. Jimis Burger, Malad West

Jimis Burger is loud, oversized and far north of Bandra, and it is worth it if you are nearby. The signature Jaw Breaker stacks about seven inches of patties (LBB). Its founder, Jimmy, started out selling burgers from a pushcart in Sangli at INR 60 each, then opened in Malad in 2014 (Curly Tales).

He also fronts a metal band. Hence the grunge decor. I would not cross the city from Colaba for it, but if you live or stay near Malad, Goregaon or Link Road, go.

  • Hours: noon to midnight
  • Rating: 4.3 from 473 reviews on magicpin; about INR 650 for two (2026)

5. Cafe Universal, Fort

Cafe Universal serves the biggest burger in Mumbai. The OMG Burger is five patties and five slices of cheese, held together by a steak knife driven through the middle. It costs INR 600 and takes at least 15 minutes to prepare (LBB), in a cafe that is more than a century old (EazyDiner).

Of all the South Mumbai burgers, this is the one I would make the trip for. Share it. Nobody needs five patties alone.

6. Louis Burger, Khar West

Louis Burger is my pick for an indulgent, bacon-loaded buff burger delivered to your door. It belongs to Zorawar Kalra’s Massive Restaurants and is the group’s biggest cloud-kitchen brand, at roughly 75% of that division’s turnover (Outlook Business). magicpin lists 12 Louis Burger locations in Mumbai (July 2026).

The Monster Cheeseburger stacks a double buff patty, English cheddar and bacon. The limited-edition Louis Grand Royale and Truffletake go further, finished with gold warq, the edible metal leaf found on Indian sweets. Gold on a burger is a gimmick. It is at least a very Mumbai one. Expect about INR 700 for two (Hospibuz).

7. Gostana, Bandra West

Gostana is the best burger in Bandra when you want something lighter. It steams its patties instead of frying them and serves them on whole-wheat or multigrain buns, a format it is credited with pioneering in India (Tripadvisor). Budget about INR 850 for two. A steamed patty will never taste like a smashed one, and I won’t pretend otherwise; this is the burger you can eat twice a week.

8. Imbiss, Ranwar, Bandra West

Imbiss is where to go for a pork, lamb or duck burger in Mumbai. The German-style “meating joint” serves pork, buff, lamb and duck, a rare spread in a city where most menus stop at buff and chicken. At about INR 1,300 for two, it is the priciest place on this list with a published price, rated 4.2 from 84 reviews on magicpin.

  • Address: 14, Ben O Lil Haven, Waroda Road, off Hill Road, Ranwar, Bandra West, Mumbai 400050
  • Other outlets: 3 Pipewala Building, 4th Pasta Lane, Colaba; Kalina (EazyDiner)

9. Hearsch Bakery, Hill Road, Bandra West

Hearsch Bakery sells the cheapest good burger in Bandra: a chicken burger that local students have lived on for years. J. Hearsch & Co. is a century-old bakery next to Holy Family Hospital. The burger cost INR 70 in 2021 (Homegrown). Expect to pay more today.

10. Jumboking, across Mumbai

Jumboking is the best-known vegetarian burger chain in Mumbai, and India’s largest homegrown one. Dheeraj and Reeta Gupta founded it in Malad on 23 August 2001 with INR 2 lakh (INR 200,000). It began as “Chaat Factory”, selling vada pav at INR 5, and now has about 200 outlets (Wikipedia, Jumboking).

Best burger in Bandra: where to start

Bandra has more good burger places than any other part of Mumbai, and I would start at Good Flippin’ in Pali Hill. Half of this list is in Bandra West: Good Flippin’, Mag St., Gostana, Imbiss and Hearsch Bakery. Pali Hill, 24th Road and Hill Road are all within walking distance, so the crawl plans itself: a Classic at Good Flippin’, Mag St. on 24th Road if you still have room, and Hearsch on Hill Road for the cheap one.

Best veg burger in Mumbai

For vegetarians, Jumboking is the default choice and Good Flippin’ is the more interesting meal. Jumboking’s whole menu is vegetarian. At Good Flippin’, a mixed table can order veg and buff side by side.

Frequently asked questions about burgers in Mumbai

Is beef legal in Mumbai, and what is a “buff” burger? Cow, bull and bullock meat has been banned in Maharashtra since 5 March 2015. Water buffalo is still legal. A “buff” burger has a water-buffalo patty, and that is what Mumbai restaurants serve when they say “beef”.

Which is the best burger in Mumbai right now? Good Flippin’ Burgers’ Classic (two buff patties, two cheddar slices, truffle mayo, brioche, INR 365) is my top pick for 2026. Mag St.’s double smash buff burger is the best sit-down alternative.

Where is the best burger in Bandra? Good Flippin’ Burgers on Dr. Ambedkar Road, Pali Hill. Mag St. on 24th Road is a close second, and Hearsch Bakery on Hill Road is the budget option.

What is the biggest burger in Mumbai? Cafe Universal’s OMG Burger in Fort: five patties, five cheese slices and a steak knife through the middle, INR 600. The other contender is Jimis Burger’s Jaw Breaker in Malad, about seven inches tall.

How much does a good burger cost in Mumbai? From about INR 70 for Hearsch Bakery’s chicken burger (2021 price) to INR 365 to 600 for a signature burger. A meal for two runs from about INR 650 at Jimis Burger to INR 1,300 at Imbiss.

Is there a Shake Shack or Five Guys in Mumbai? I could not confirm an official restaurant from either brand in Mumbai. Some Zomato listings named “Shake Shack” appear to be unrelated local businesses. For an American-style smash burger, go to Good Flippin’ or Mag St.

Is vada pav Mumbai’s original burger? Vada pav is Mumbai’s own bun-and-fried-filling street snack, and it did give the city one of its burger chains. Jumboking began in 2001 as “Chaat Factory”, selling vada pav at INR 5, before becoming India’s largest homegrown vegetarian burger chain.

Which burger spots in South Mumbai (Colaba, Fort) are worth the trip? Cafe Universal in Fort for the OMG Burger, and Woodside Inn on Wodehouse Road in Colaba, best during its July Beer & Burger Festival. Mag St. and Imbiss also have Colaba outlets.
