Hans im Glück Leipzig is the chain’s only branch in the city, at Augustusplatz 14, 04109 Leipzig, facing the university’s main building. It opens at noon every day and closes at 11 pm from Sunday to Thursday, at midnight on Friday and Saturday. The menu runs to more than 30 burgers, and 14 of them are vegetarian or vegan. Leipzig prices aren’t published; at other German branches a burger costs €11.50 to €16.90. Google reviewers give it about 4.5 out of 5. My take: it’s the safest table in the city centre when half your group doesn’t eat meat. Just don’t arrive starving on a Saturday night.

How I put this together: on 11 October 2026 I checked every detail against the restaurant’s official page, the chain’s national menu and aggregated review data. I haven’t eaten at the Leipzig branch for this piece, so there is no Burger Breton rating. The opinions are mine. The facts come from the sources linked in each section.

Where is Hans im Glück in Leipzig?

Hans im Glück Leipzig is at Augustusplatz 14, opposite Leipzig University’s main building and a short walk from the Opera House and the Panorama Tower, says the official restaurant page. Look for the corner where Grimmaische Straße, the main shopping street, opens onto the square. There is no second branch. I found none on the chain’s site or in any directory.

The square itself is huge. At about 40,000 m², Augustusplatz is one of the largest city squares in Germany, according to World City Trail. If you want a burger near Augustusplatz, this is the only one on the square.

Getting there by tram

The Augustusplatz tram stop is a few steps from the door. Secondary sources list lines 4, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15 and 16 there. I couldn’t match that list against the operator’s own map, so check the current LVB network map before you set off.

Parking near Hans im Glück Leipzig

Park under the square. The paid underground car park beneath Augustusplatz is the closest, with its entrance on Goethestraße, according to onlinestreet.de. The official page only says that parking is nearby.

Hans im Glück Leipzig opening hours

Hans im Glück Leipzig opens at 12 noon every day and closes at 11 pm from Sunday to Thursday, at midnight on Friday and Saturday. These are the official hours (Öffnungszeiten) on the chain’s website, checked on 11 October 2026. Wanderlog shows the same.

Day Hours
Monday 12:00–23:00
Tuesday 12:00–23:00
Wednesday 12:00–23:00
Thursday 12:00–23:00
Friday 12:00–00:00
Saturday 12:00–00:00
Sunday 12:00–23:00

Some directories still show 11 am to midnight, or 1 am closing at weekends. I’ve ignored them. Planning a late meal? Call first.

Hans im Glück Leipzig menu: what to order

Every burger comes with lettuce, red onion, tomato and a house sauce, on sourdough, multigrain, brioche or no bun at all. That’s the chain’s official menu, and it applies to all its German branches. The names are playful German words that tell you little about what’s inside, so here is how the menu breaks down.

Beef burgers and smash burgers

Fourteen beef burgers sit on the national menu, from the Klassik to the house burger named after the chain: Klassik, Hans im Glück, Elsässer, Avocado, Birkenwald, Feuriger, Käse & Speck, Smokey Rösti, Wilder Westen, Casanova, Geissbock, Vollmundig, Marktschreier and Hochstapler. Single, Double and Triple smash burgers come on top. This autumn’s seasonal edition, “Sommer küsst Herbst”, adds a Double Smash Rösti & Speck (bacon), a Herbstgarten salad and seasonal drinks.

Chicken burgers

There are six: Eitler Gockel, Feuerwerk, Geselle, Hummusheld, Meisterwerk and Ziegenhirte.

Vegetarian and vegan burgers in Leipzig

This is where Hans im Glück earns its place. Six vegetarian and eight vegan burgers make 14 meat-free options, almost as many as the beef list. Vegetarian: Farbenspiel, Hornträger, Beherzter, Seelenheil, Ciao Bella and Falafresh. Vegan: Glücksgriff, Zeitgeist, Erbsenkönigin, Kräuterraucher, Knusperschote, Wolpertinger, Pestoprinz and Weltenbummler. I know of no other sit-down place in Leipzig city centre with a meat-free list that long, and for a mixed group that matters more than any single patty.

Sides, drinks and desserts

Fries are only the start:

  • Goldfritten (fries), sweet potato fries and Loaded Fritten
  • Vegan nuggets, BBQ Cauli Wings, Knusperbohnen and Ringelei
  • Drinks: house “Durstlöscher” lemonades, iced tea, soft drinks, coffees, matcha latte, and cocktails with or without alcohol (Aperol Spritz, Mojito, Gin & Tonic)

The Leipzig menu on speisekarte.de also lists chocolate cake, crêpes, waffles, vegan cookie dough, the KORNGESUND bowl (pulses and quinoa) and salads. That page was last updated on 4 January 2023, so treat it as a guide, not a promise.

How much does a burger cost at Hans im Glück?

A burger at Hans im Glück usually costs between €11.50 and €16.90, based on German menus updated between January and June 2026. Those are not Leipzig prices. The official menu shows none, and the Leipzig listing dates from 2023, so I’ve used the Stuttgart and Mainz branches as a benchmark.

Item Price Where recorded
Klassik burger €11.50 Stuttgart / Mainz, 2026
Double Smash €13.90 Stuttgart / Mainz, 2026
Triple Smash €16.90 Stuttgart / Mainz, 2026
Other burgers about €12.50–€16.90 Stuttgart / Mainz, 2026

Hans im Glück Leipzig reviews: what diners say

Diners like the burgers and the room, and complain about the service. Wanderlog relays a Google rating of about 4.5/5 from 8,693 reviews and a TripAdvisor rating of about 4.0/5 from 404. Another aggregator shows 4.4/5 from 7,850 reviews. I couldn’t open Google or TripAdvisor directly, so read these as approximate figures, checked on 11 October 2026.

What reviewers praise

  • An attractive interior
  • Burgers you can customise, bun included
  • A long list of vegetarian and vegan options
  • Friendly staff
  • A pleasant terrace

What reviewers criticise

  • Long waits
  • Wrong orders and billing mistakes
  • Uneven service, which some call unfriendly

The gap between the two ratings tells its own story: the food rarely disappoints, the wait sometimes does. Wanderlog’s summary puts a typical visit at one to two hours. Going to a concert at the Gewandhaus or a show at the Opera, both on the same square? Eat early.

Booking, takeaway and delivery

Call to book: +49 341 44293066. The official page says online booking is unavailable.

  • Takeaway: Click & Collect through the chain’s “Glücksbringer” programme
  • Delivery: Lieferando. A Wolt page for Leipzig also exists, but I couldn’t check what it offers.

Is Hans im Glück Leipzig worth it?

Yes, with one condition: you have time. Hans im Glück is a table-service grill, not a fast-food counter, and both the price and the length of a visit reflect that. What it does better than anything else in the centre is choice: four bun options and 14 meat-free burgers. Where it slips, according to thousands of reviews, is speed and order accuracy. My advice: book for Friday and Saturday evenings, read the order back to your server and check the bill before you pay.

Want something independent? Our Leipzig burger page maps the neighbourhoods to explore, from the Karli in the Südvorstadt to Plagwitz. Falstaff’s 2024 street food guide named Prime Burger (Große Fleischergasse 4), Big B (the kiosk on Südplatz) and SmackThat (Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 72) among the city’s best burgers.

The Hans im Glück chain: from Munich to Augustusplatz

Hans im Glück is a German burger grill chain that Thomas Hirschberger founded in Munich in 2010. It sells itself on “fresh burgers, colourful bowls and creative cocktails” and takes its name from the Brothers Grimm tale “Hans in Luck”. The Birkenwald (“birch forest”) burger nods to the birch-trunk décor the brand is known for. No source confirms that décor in Leipzig.

This photo was published by the chain and was not taken in Leipzig; whether the Leipzig branch has this décor is unconfirmed. (Photo: HANS IM GLÜCK Franchise GmbH, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hans\_im\_Glück\_Gastraum.jpeg)

In January 2020, Hirschberger sold his 90% stake in Hans im Glück Franchise GmbH to GAB, an existing minority shareholder, and to BackWerk co-founders Dirk Schneider and Hans-Christian Limmer, Tageskarte reported. The chain then had 81 restaurants (26 company-owned, 55 franchised) and about 3,500 staff. Revenue had grown from €120 million in 2018 to €147 million in 2019.

Several franchisees have since gone under. Saarlouis, Trier and Kaiserslautern became insolvent in July 2024 and were taken over by head office, which kept their staff. Fulda followed in May 2025. None of the sources I checked mention Leipzig, and the official page listed Augustusplatz as open on 11 October 2026. When the Leipzig branch opened, and whether a franchisee runs it, I couldn’t establish.
