Where to eat the best burgers in Lyon: bakery buns and Alpine cheeses, halal smash burgers, a table-service bistro. Addresses, prices in euros and my method.

The best burgers in Lyon, France, are at Les Bibi’s Burger (bakery buns and rare Alpine cheeses), Gonzague (a burger bistro with real table service), PNY on the Presqu’île and Butcher est 2011, a steakhouse in the Terreaux. For smash burgers, go to Pignouf or Smatch & Beef, which is 100% halal. Expect to pay roughly €8 to €15 for a burger, based on prices published by Lyon’s food press between 2022 and 2026.
I built this list in October 2026 by cross-checking Lyon’s local food guides from 2025 and 2026. Every address below appears in at least two independent sources. The ranking rests on those sources, not on a tasting tour, and where I give an opinion I say what it is based on. Lyon eats bouchon food first. Its best burgers draw on the same larder: Charolais beef, Alpine cheese, bread from the baker down the street. That is what I rewarded. Every Lyon guide we publish is on our Lyon burger restaurants hub.
Where to eat burgers in Lyon: the top 10 at a glance
The ten best burger restaurants in Lyon cluster in three areas: the Presqu’île and Terreaux, the 3rd arrondissement around Part-Dieu and rue Paul Bert, and the 7th arrondissement. The table gives each address’s neighbourhood, signature burger and style.

How I ranked the best burger restaurants in Lyon
I ranked each restaurant on what verifiable sources say about its product: the beef, the bun, the cheese and how much is made in-house. I only kept addresses named by at least two independent sources published in 2025 or 2026.
My main sources are Lyon Secret (26 September 2025), Le Bonbon Lyon (updated 2 June 2026), lyon.food’s smash burger guide (14 September 2026), rankeat and Lyonresto.
I did not use Google star ratings. The figures I found came from aggregators and carried no date. Prices are quoted with their source and year. Smash Burger Joint, BRUZ Smashburger and Starsmash by Amixem are missing because I could not confirm a full, consistent address for any of them. Opening hours in Lyon change often, so check each restaurant’s own page before you go.
1. Les Bibi’s Burger: bakery buns and rare Alpine cheeses
Les Bibi’s Burger tops my list for its local sourcing: buns baked every morning by a baker, and small Alpine cheeses no chain stocks. It is also one of the cheapest serious burgers in Lyon, from €8 according to Le Bonbon.
- Addresses: 214 rue Paul Bert, 69003 Lyon (Part-Dieu / Paul Bert) and 22 rue Hippolyte Flandrin, 69001 Lyon (Pentes / Terreaux)
- Signature burger: the Spicy Pipou (Lyon Secret, 2025)
- Cheeses: Palouse des Aravis, Tomme Boudane and a farmhouse gouda
- Price: burgers from €8 (Le Bonbon Lyon)
The cheese list is what sets it apart. Palouse des Aravis and Tomme Boudane come from the mountains east of Lyon, and you rarely see either on a burger. A baker’s bun and a farm cheese for €8 is the best value in this guide, and that is why Les Bibi’s beats PNY to first place. If you want to try the baker’s-bun approach at home, start with our homemade burger buns recipe.
2. Gonzague Burgers – Maison Gourmande: the best table-service burger in Lyon
Book Gonzague if you want real plates, cutlery and a waiter rather than a counter. The cheddar sauce is cooked in a pot. The homemade fries are unlimited.
- Address: 26 avenue Jean Jaurès, 69007 Lyon (Guillotière / Jean Macé)
- Signature burger: Le Savoyard (Lyon Secret, 2025)
- Founded: 2018, at 24 rue des Martyrs de Vingré in Saint-Étienne
- Concept: “quality burgers in a traditional restaurant with real table service”, according to its development director in Toute la Franchise
Gonzague started in Saint-Étienne, about an hour south-west of Lyon, and grew through franchising. Its Savoyard is named after Savoie, the Alpine region, and it is one more Lyon burger that leans on mountain cheese.
3. PNY Presqu’île: aged beef and six-month cheddar
PNY brings Parisian burger craft to the Presqu’île: beef aged three weeks, cheddar aged six months. It opened on 7 February 2022, PNY’s first address outside Paris.
- Address: 2 rue Ferrandière, 69002 Lyon (Presqu’île)
- Signature burger: the Vintage Cheeseburger (Lyon Secret, 2025)
- Veggie option: the Atomic (Lyon Secret)
- Price: around €13 per burger at the 2022 opening (Le Bonbon Lyon)
Co-founder Rudy Guénaire built the brand after crossing the United States on foot in 2012, a 5,000 km (3,100-mile) walk, according to Le Bonbon Lyon. The 2022 price is the latest I could source. Expect to pay more today.
4. Butcher est 2011: a steakhouse burger under stone vaults
Butcher est 2011 is the pick for meat lovers: a steakhouse, founded in 2011, that serves thick hand-chopped patties of Black Angus and Wagyu beef. Burgers cost around €15, according to rankeat.
- Address: 30 rue Lanterne, 69001 Lyon (Terreaux, Presqu’île)
- Beef: Black Angus and Wagyu
- Setting: vaulted ceilings in pierre dorée, the golden stone of the Lyon region
- Price: around €15 (rankeat)
At €15 it is the most expensive burger on this list. What you pay for is the beef and the vaulted room, a short walk across the Saône from Vieux-Lyon. Listings give conflicting opening hours, so check them with the restaurant before you go.

5. Big Fernand Lyon: the French gourmet chain on rue Ferrandière
Big Fernand is the reliable chain option in Lyon: bread delivered every morning, raw-milk cheeses, French beef and homemade sauces. It is fifth, not higher, because it is a chain. You get the same burger in Paris or Toulouse, and nothing on it is specific to Lyon.
- Address: 36 rue Ferrandière, 69002 Lyon (Presqu’île)
- Founded: 2012
- Bun: bread delivered fresh every morning
- Cheese and beef: raw-milk cheeses, French beef
Rue Ferrandière is the closest thing Lyon has to a burger street: PNY at no. 2, the smash chain Junk at no. 22 and Big Fernand at no. 36, all within a few minutes’ walk. Junk has its own guide: Junk Burger Lyon, menu and address. I reviewed Big Fernand’s Toulouse branch in detail: see my Big Fernand Toulouse review with menu and prices.
6. L’Atelier de Marion: homemade burgers with Saint-Nectaire
L’Atelier de Marion makes everything in-house, burgers and fries included, and is known for its Saint-Nectaire, a soft cheese from Auvergne. It is a neighbourhood favourite in the 7th arrondissement.
- Address: 3 rue de Bonald, 69007 Lyon
- Signature burger: the Burger Italien (Lyon Secret, 2025)
- Specialty: Saint-Nectaire cheese
- Sides: homemade fries

7. Smatch & Beef: the best halal burger in Lyon
Smatch & Beef is where to eat a halal burger in Lyon. Its smash burgers are 100% halal and made with French beef, from €10.40 according to rankeat.
- Addresses: 2 place Julie Daubié, 69008 Lyon (the original, opened in 2022) and 116 rue Paul Bert, 69003 Lyon
- Style: smash burgers, 100% halal
- Beef: French
- Price: from €10.40 (rankeat)
The rue Paul Bert branch is a short walk from Les Bibi’s Burger. That makes the 3rd arrondissement a good place for a two-stop burger crawl.

8. Pignouf: the bar that started Lyon’s smash burger trend
lyon.food credits Pignouf with having “launched the smash burger trend in Lyon”. It is a vintage-style bar serving smash burgers and sandwiches.

9. Les 3 Chauves: a double smash with organic beef
Les 3 Chauves is a bar-restaurant whose homemade burgers use organic beef, and lyon.food singles out its double smash burger. With Pignouf a few streets away, the 7th is the arrondissement for smash burgers.
- Address: 88 rue Béchevelin, 69007 Lyon
- Style: homemade burgers, organic patties
- Pick: the double smash burger (lyon.food)
10. Les Burgers de Papa: the chain born in Lyon
Les Burgers de Papa is Lyon’s own burger chain. Former radio host Yves Hecker founded it in 2013, using Charolais beef raised in the Roannais, the area around Roanne in the Loire. It is on this list for its place in Lyon’s burger history, not for a table I can send you to today.
The last few years have been hard. The Lyon Part-Dieu branch closed in January 2024 and the Villeurbanne-Charpennes subsidiary went into receivership, according to Le Journal des Entreprises. Lyon Capitale reported on 12 January 2026 that BChef, a Paris group, had bought the brand, with 21 restaurants in France, 3 of them in the Lyon metropolitan area.
Older guides still list four Lyon addresses, including the closed Part-Dieu branch. I won’t publish an address until I can confirm which three are open, so check the chain’s official site before you go.
Smash, gourmet, halal or veggie: which Lyon burger for you?
Pick by style: smash burgers at Pignouf, Les 3 Chauves and Smatch & Beef, gourmet burgers at Les Bibi’s, PNY and Big Fernand, a halal burger at Smatch & Beef, and a sit-down meal at Gonzague or Butcher.
- Best smash burger in Lyon: Pignouf, the trendsetter according to lyon.food; Les 3 Chauves for a double smash
- Best gourmet burger in Lyon: Les Bibi’s Burger for its cheeses, PNY for its aged beef and cheddar
- Best halal burger in Lyon: Smatch & Beef, 100% halal
- Best veggie burger in Lyon: most addresses offer one, such as the Atomic at PNY (Lyon Secret)
- Best for a sit-down dinner: Gonzague for table service, Butcher for the steakhouse setting
Junk, the Paris smash chain, also has a Lyon branch on rue Ferrandière, covered in my Junk Burger Lyon guide. To compare with where the chain started, read my guide to Junk smash burgers in Paris.

Is Lyon a good city for burgers, beyond bouchons?
Yes: Lyon’s best burgers use the same regional produce as its bouchons, from Charolais beef to Alpine cheeses like Palouse des Aravis, Tomme Boudane and Saint-Nectaire. The city also hosts the World Burger Contest at the Sirha food trade show.
As far as I could find, no Lyon restaurant has won the World Burger Contest yet. The 2023 title went to Julien Chauvenet of Foodies in Dijon, and the 2025 title to Louis-Gautier Lepers of Papa Renard in Morzine, according to Lyon Capitale and macommune.info. For more on Dijon’s food scene, read my visit to the Maison des Cariatides in Dijon.
