Double Whopper with Cheese Copycat Recipe (US-Style, 2026 Update)
Double Whopper with Cheese copycat recipe: two 1/4 lb flame-grilled patties, melted American cheese and 2026 US-style lemon mayo. Makes 2 in 30 minutes.

To make a Double Whopper with Cheese at home, grill two 1/4 lb (113 g) beef patties per burger over very high heat for about 2 minutes per side and melt a slice of cheese on each. Then stack them on a toasted sesame bun with pickles, ketchup, white onion, two tomato slices, shredded iceberg and mayonnaise. This double whopper with cheese copycat recipe makes two burgers in about 30 minutes. It is my home reproduction, not Burger King’s official recipe: the chain does not publish its seasoning, beef blend or sauce formulas.
This page is about the US-style burger: American cheese, a quarter pound of beef per patty, and the bun and mayo changes Burger King made in 2026. For the plain double without cheese, see my homemade Double Whopper copycat recipe. For the single burger and its full ingredient breakdown, read what goes on a Whopper.

What is in a Double Whopper with Cheese?
A Double Whopper with Cheese is two flame-grilled beef patties with cheese, tomato, lettuce, mayonnaise, pickles, white onion and ketchup on a toasted sesame seed bun. In the US and Canada, Burger King describes the Double Whopper as ‘two ¼ lb savoury flame-grilled beef patties’, which is about 113 g of raw beef each (Wikipedia, citing bk.com; bk-menus.com).
It all starts with the original Whopper, created in 1957 in Miami by James McLamore and sold for 37 cents (Wikipedia).

The build changes from one market to another. Here is what each chain publishes on its official pages:
| Market | Product name | Beef | Cheese | Sauces | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| US / Canada | Double Whopper (with Cheese) | 2 × 1/4 lb (113 g) patties | Not stated on an accessible official page | Mayonnaise, ketchup | Wikipedia citing bk.com |
| France | Double Whopper Cheese | 2 flame-grilled patties | Processed cheddar, 2 slices in the ingredient list | Ketchup, unnamed sauce | burgerking.fr |
| Australia (Hungry Jack’s) | Double Whopper Cheese | 2 flame-grilled Aussie beef patties | Cheese | Mayo, tomato sauce | Hungry Jack’s |
| Switzerland | Double WHOPPER (no cheese) | 222 g of beef in total | None | Not compared here | burger-king.ch |

Hungry Jack’s is Burger King’s Australian franchise, and ‘tomato sauce’ on its menu is what Americans call ketchup.
What cheese is on a Whopper: American cheese or cheddar?
Burger King France names its cheese: ‘processed cheddar’. The US side is murkier. American cheese is the cheese US copycats reach for, but I could not find an official US page that confirms it or gives the number of slices: bk.com redirects to burgerking.ca, and the page did not load. Mexican nutrition aggregators list two slices of American cheese on the ‘Whopper Doble con Queso’, but those listings are not official.
Even the French page contradicts itself. The description mentions ‘a delicious slice of cheese’, while the ingredient list says ‘2 slices’ (burgerking.fr, checked October 13, 2026). I go with two, one melted on each patty. That matches the French ingredient list and Dan Toombs’ 2020 copycat, the only dedicated ‘with Cheese’ recipe I found.
My pick is American cheese. It slumps into a smooth, even layer within seconds, and that layer is exactly the fast-food texture you are trying to copy. Toombs uses deli cheddar instead (Great Curry Recipes). Cheddar tastes sharper but melts patchier. Fine if you care more about flavor than accuracy. Not my choice here.

What changed on the Whopper in 2026?
In February 2026, Burger King changed the Whopper in more than 7,000 US restaurants. It now has a new sesame bun with a glaze that holds the seeds in place, a creamier mayonnaise ‘with a zesty zing of citrus’, and a clamshell box instead of paper wrap. The 1/4 lb patty stayed the same (The Daily Meal; 1011 Now). Our 2026 Burger King Whopper news roundup covers the launch in full.
These changes are only confirmed for the US. Nothing I found shows the same changes in France, Spain or Mexico. Burger King has not published the new mayo recipe either, so my lemon-mayo step below is a guess at the effect, not the chain’s formula.
Ingredients for 2 Double Whoppers with Cheese
You need 1 lb (454 g) of ground beef shaped into four 1/4 lb patties, two 6-inch sesame buns and four slices of cheese. Garnish quantities are doubled from the single-Whopper amounts published by Top Secret Recipes. Butter and mayo follow Dan Toombs’ double copycat.
- 1 lb (454 g) ground beef, shaped into 4 patties of 1/4 lb (113 g) each
- Salt and black pepper (my choice; Burger King does not publish its seasoning)
- 2 sesame seed buns, about 6 in (15 cm) across
- 4 tbsp butter, for toasting the buns
- 4 slices American cheese (or deli cheddar)
- 2 to 4 tbsp mayonnaise, plus a few drops of lemon juice for the 2026 US-style citrus note (optional)
- 2 tsp ketchup
- 6 dill pickle slices
- 6 to 8 thin rings of white onion
- 4 tomato slices
- 1/2 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
Time: 20 minutes prep, about 6 minutes on the grill. Yield: 2 burgers.
How to make a Double Whopper with Cheese: step by step
Thin, wide patties and a grill as hot as you can get it. After that it is a fast melt and the right stacking order.
1. Shape the patties
Divide the beef into four 1/4 lb (113 g) balls and press each into a thin patty a little wider than the bun. Beef shrinks on the grill, so a wide patty still reaches the edge of a 6-inch bun once cooked. Season both sides with salt and pepper just before grilling, not earlier.
2. Heat the grill very hot
Get a charcoal or gas grill as hot as it will go, with the grate clean and oiled. Burger King cooks its patties on Duke and Nieco conveyor broilers in a cycle of about 2 to 4 minutes, with temperature and belt speed preset for each product (Tasting Table; Food Republic). At home, direct flame on a backyard grill gets closest.

3. Toast the buns
Butter the cut sides of each bun and toast them, cut side down, at the edge of the grill until golden. The toasted surface stops mayo and tomato juice from soaking through. For the 2026 US look, pick a bun with a glossy, seeded top.
4. Grill the patties
Grill the patties for about 2 minutes per side, the timing Toombs uses on a very hot barbecue, and flip only once. Ground beef must reach 160°F (71°C) inside to be safe, according to the USDA FSIS. Don’t guess: use a probe thermometer. My burger patty internal temperature guide goes into more detail.

5. Melt the cheese
Right after the flip, lay one slice of cheese on each patty and close the lid for the last minute. The heat of the patty does the rest. One Burger King employee told Tasting Table that the bottom bun and patties go into a holding unit called the ‘Hopper’ mainly to melt the cheese (Tasting Table, May 24, 2026). That is one employee’s account, not an official procedure. Still, it tells you the melt is deliberate, not an afterthought.

6. Build the burger in Whopper order
Stack from the bottom up: bottom bun, cheesed patty, second cheesed patty, pickles, ketchup, onion, tomato, lettuce, mayo, top bun. This vegetable and sauce order comes from Burger King’s own Whopper build, which the chain posted on Twitter in 2020 without quantities (Dissapore). Top Secret Recipes uses the same order. I spread the mayo on the top bun so it sits on the cool lettuce, well away from the hot beef.

Why this recipe tastes like the original
Flame char on thin patties is what most copycats lose: they cook in a pan and end up with a generic diner burger. The second giveaway is hot against cold. Cheese and beef sit at the bottom, crisp vegetables and mayo on top. Put the lettuce under the patties, as plenty of home cooks do, and it wilts within a minute. Keep the Whopper stacking order and the layers stay separate, just as they are in the restaurant.
Weight matters too. Four 113 g patties match the published US quarter-pound spec, so the beef-to-bun ratio comes out right. For an even heavier stack, my Triple Whopper Cheese copycat adds a third patty.
Double Whopper with Cheese calories and nutrition
Burger King France lists 934 kcal for one Double Whopper Cheese. I found no verified official US figure, and aggregators quote anywhere from 930 to 1,061 kcal, so I won’t cite one. Here are the two official figures I could verify, checked on October 13, 2026:
| Per burger | France (Burger King) | Australia (Hungry Jack’s) |

Sources: burgerking.fr and Hungry Jack’s. I converted kJ to kcal myself. The two restaurant burgers use different beef, cheese and sauces, so neither set of figures applies to my homemade version. In France, the listed allergens are celery, sesame, egg, gluten and milk, with possible traces of soy, tree nuts and mustard.

Double Whopper with Cheese copycat FAQ
How many slices of cheese are on a Double Whopper with Cheese? Probably two, but no official US page I could access confirms it. Burger King France lists two slices of processed cheddar in its ingredients, even though its product description says one.
How much beef is in a Double Whopper with Cheese? In the US and Canada, two 1/4 lb patties, about 113 g raw each, or half a pound in total. Burger King Switzerland lists 222 g of beef for its Double Whopper.
Is the Whopper sauce mayonnaise or a special sauce? In the US it is mayonnaise plus ketchup. Since February 2026 the US mayo is creamier with a citrus note. Burger King France lists ketchup and an unnamed ‘sauce’.
Can I make a Double Whopper without a grill? Yes. A ripping-hot cast-iron pan cooks the patties well, but you lose the flame char, and for me that char is the Whopper. Whatever the heat source, cook to 160°F (71°C) inside.
What is the difference between a Double Whopper and a Double Whopper with Cheese? The cheese version adds melted cheese slices to the same two patties and Whopper toppings. For a smaller cheese burger, see my Burger King cheeseburger copycat recipe.
Did the Whopper change in 2026? Yes, in the US. In February 2026 Burger King introduced a glazed sesame bun, a creamier mayo with a citrus note and a clamshell box. The beef patty did not change.
