Whataburger has 20 restaurants in the city of Austin, according to the chain’s official locator on 10 October 2026, and 19 of them are open. My pick for most visitors is #992 at Guadalupe & 28th, on the Drag beside the University of Texas campus, where the dining room and the drive-thru never close. Order a Whataburger, Double or Triple Meat, and ask for Fancy Ketchup. Then be patient: a 2022 analysis of Google ratings put most Austin locations below the Texas average.
I built this guide from the official Whataburger locator, which I went through listing by listing on 10 October 2026, and cross-checked opening dates and context with Austin local press. Every fact that isn’t mine carries its source. Two things are missing on purpose: menu prices and current star ratings. I couldn’t verify either for an Austin restaurant, and I’d rather leave a gap than print a guess.
What is Whataburger? The Texas burger chain in one paragraph
Whataburger is a Texas fast-food burger chain, founded in Corpus Christi on 8 August 1950 by Harmon Dobson. It started in a stand on Ayers Street, selling a 25-cent hamburger made with a quarter-pound patty on a wide bun. The original pitch was a burger so big you needed two hands to hold it, which is where the name comes from (official history).
In 2001, the Texas House of Representatives declared Whataburger a “Texas Treasure” for its 50th anniversary, through resolution H.R. 723 (Texas Legislature). In Austin, the chain has a narrower job: it’s where the night ends. Our guide to burgers in Austin calls it the state’s late-night reflex, and the 24-hour listings below back that up.
Best Whataburger in Austin: Guadalupe & 28th (#992), near UT
The most useful Whataburger in Austin is #992 at 2800 Guadalupe St, on the Drag at the edge of West Campus. Its dining room and drive-thru never close. If you’re staying downtown or near the University of Texas, it’s the closest round-the-clock option on this list. It also sits on the same stretch of Guadalupe as Dirty Martin’s Place, the campus burger counter open since 1926, so you can compare a Texas chain with an Austin institution without moving the car.
- Address: 2800 Guadalupe St, Austin, TX 78705
- Phone: (512) 480-5993
- Dining room and drive-thru: open 24 hours
- Curbside and delivery: 24 hours, Monday to Friday
- Weekends: delivery from 5 a.m. to midnight, and online ordering restarts at 6 a.m.
- Area: the Drag and West Campus, next to the UT campus
- Source: official #992 page, checked 10 October 2026
It has one weak spot. When KXAN reported on the poor Google ratings of Austin’s Whataburgers in 2022, one of the complaints it quoted was about the Guadalupe restaurant near UT. A 24-hour counter on the edge of a campus draws a late crowd. Plan for a wait after midnight.

Other key Whataburger Austin locations: South Austin, East Oltorf and the airport
Four other restaurants are worth knowing: Barton Springs Rd for South Austin, East Oltorf for its Austin-only design, the airport branch for a first or last Texas meal, and Cameron Rd for its 1971 A-frame. The table compares them with #992. Every line was checked on the official locator on 10 October 2026.

Whataburger Barton Springs Rd (#346): the South Austin pick
Whataburger #346, at 601 Barton Springs Rd, is the most practical stop after Zilker Park or a walk down South Congress. The drive-thru, dining room and delivery run 24 hours. Curbside pickup runs from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day (official #346 page).
Whataburger East Oltorf (#1149): a design built for Austin
The East Oltorf Whataburger, at 1616 E Oltorf St, is the only restaurant of the chain built with an Austin-specific design. It opened on 21 January 2020 as Austin’s 19th Whataburger, with an outdoor patio, a 100-seat dining room, digital menu boards and recycling and compost bins (Community Impact, KFOX). It’s listed as open 24 hours, with curbside and delivery.
Whataburger Austin airport (#1181): in the cell phone lot
The Austin airport Whataburger is in the cell phone lot of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, at 2901 Spirit of Texas Dr #100, not inside the terminal. It opened on 28 January 2021 with 72 seats (Community Impact). It only makes sense with a car: someone picking you up, or a driver waiting for your flight to land.
Check its hours before you go, because the sources disagree. At opening in 2021, the drive-thru was announced as open 24 hours. On 10 October 2026, the official locator showed 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 24 hours at weekends. Landing late on a weekday? Call (737) 228-1311 first.
Whataburger Cameron Rd (#84): the A-frame from 1971
The Cameron Rd Whataburger, store #84 of the chain, was built in 1971 in the chain’s classic A-frame style, and its canopy has since been enclosed. That date comes from a single hobbyist site, Road Arch, and I couldn’t confirm it with a second source. The A-frame itself goes back further: the chain’s first orange-and-white A-frame, store #24, opened in Odessa, Texas, in 1961 (official history).

Whataburger Austin menu: what to order on a first visit
On a first visit to Whataburger in Austin, order the namesake Whataburger, in Double or Triple Meat if you’re hungry, and add a bottle of Fancy Ketchup to the bag. The menu is the same across the chain: I found no Austin-only item on the official sources. The #992 page lists breakfast, lunch and dinner service (official #992 page).

- Whataburger: the signature burger, sold as a single, Double Meat or Triple Meat.
- Whataburger Jr.: the smaller version.
- Bacon & Cheese Whataburger: the classic with bacon and cheese.
- Whatachick’n: the chicken sandwich.
- Breakfast: biscuits, taquitos and pancakes.
- Sauces to take home: sauces in 14 oz and 20 oz bottles, plus salsa, picante sauce and pancake mix. Fancy Ketchup has been sold in bottles since 2013.

Whataburger Austin prices: why there’s no price list here
I’m not publishing Whataburger prices for Austin. The official sources don’t show a price until you start an order tied to one restaurant, and the figures on aggregator sites aren’t sourced, dated or specific to Austin. For an exact amount in dollars, open the Whataburger app or the official menu, pick #992 or #346, and check the total. Texas sales tax is added at the register on top of the menu price.
Whataburger Austin reviews: why Austin ranks below the Texas average
Austin’s Whataburgers have a reputation problem. In August 2022, a San Antonio Express-News analysis of Google ratings, picked up by KXAN, looked at 20 Austin restaurants. Sixteen scored below the Texas average of 4.1 stars (KXAN).
- Recurring complaints: long waits, wrong orders and cold food.
- Lowest-rated location in 2022: E Parmer Ln/Dessau Rd, at 3.4 stars.
- Campus location: one of the complaints quoted was about the Guadalupe restaurant near UT.
Whataburger Austin reviews in 2022: 16 of 20 locations rated below the Texas Google average of 4.1 stars, versus 4 at or above it; lowest: E Parmer Ln/Dessau Rd at 3.4 stars (Chart: Burger Breton, data from San Antonio Express-News via KXAN (August 2022))
These numbers date from August 2022. I couldn’t get current Google, Yelp or Tripadvisor ratings per restaurant, so I’m not quoting any. My read: the complaints are about execution, not about the burger. Check your bag before you drive off, and order ahead in the app when you can.
A short history of Whataburger: from Corpus Christi to 1,130+ restaurants
Whataburger grew from one Corpus Christi stand in 1950 to “more than 1,130 restaurants in 17 states”, according to its official history page. Its 1,000th restaurant opened in Atlanta in 2024 (official history). For the wider story behind the sandwich itself, read our history of the hamburger.
- 1950: Harmon Dobson opens the first stand on Ayers Street in Corpus Christi.
- 1961: the first orange-and-white A-frame, store #24, opens in Odessa.
- 1982: 24-hour service starts at three Corpus Christi restaurants.
- 2001: the Texas House declares Whataburger a “Texas Treasure”.
- 2009: headquarters move from Corpus Christi to San Antonio.
- 2019: BDT Capital Partners buys a majority stake; the Dobson family keeps a minority share.
- 2025: Debbie Stroud becomes CEO on 1 January, after 27 years at McDonald’s and 5 at Starbucks. She succeeds the retiring Ed Nelson.
Sources: official history, Wikipedia, KBTX. In the Austin area, the chain’s newer look arrived in Round Rock around May 2021, at 17000 N. RR 620. That design swaps the A-frame for a softer orange-and-white palette (CultureMap Austin).
How Whataburger fits into Austin’s burger scene
Whataburger is Austin’s default late-night burger, and that’s the job it does best. It isn’t the only local chain: P. Terry’s, founded in Austin in 2005, built its following on a short menu of simple burgers. For a burger with history, Dirty Martin’s Place has been on Guadalupe since 1926. Austin is also a smaller Whataburger market than the chain’s strongholds: Tasting Table counts 57 locations each in Houston and San Antonio, out of 774 in Texas. Our Whataburger Houston guide covers the bigger network, our guide to the best burgers in Dallas covers sit-down spots further north, and the restaurants hub lists every city.

Is Whataburger in Austin open 24 hours? Yes, most Austin locations are listed as open 24 hours. At #992 Guadalupe & 28th, both the dining room and the drive-thru stay open all night. #132 on N Lamar runs 6 a.m. to midnight on weekdays, and the airport location keeps shorter weekday hours.
Is there a Whataburger at Austin airport? Yes. Store #1181 is at 2901 Spirit of Texas Dr #100, in the cell phone lot of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, not inside the terminal. The official locator lists 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 24 hours at weekends.
What should I order at Whataburger for the first time? Start with the Whataburger itself, as a Double or Triple Meat if you’re hungry, or the Bacon & Cheese Whataburger. For breakfast, a biscuit or a taquito. Fancy Ketchup is the sauce Texans take home by the bottle.
How much does a Whataburger cost in Austin in 2026? I couldn’t verify an Austin price on official sources, so I’m not quoting one. Select a specific restaurant in the Whataburger app or on whataburger.com to see the current price in dollars. Texas sales tax is added at checkout.
Why are Austin Whataburgers rated lower than the rest of Texas? An August 2022 analysis found 16 of 20 Austin restaurants below the Texas average of 4.1 Google stars. Reviewers mostly complained about waits, wrong orders and cold food. These figures are from 2022, not current ratings.
Does Whataburger have vegetarian options? I found no dedicated vegetarian item confirmed on the official sources. Check the official menu, or ask at the counter, before you go.
Does Whataburger deliver in Austin? Yes. The official locator lists delivery at the Austin restaurants, and several deliver around the clock. You can order through the Whataburger app, which also has a loyalty program. Delivery hours vary by location: #992 limits weekend delivery to 5 a.m. to midnight.
Whataburger or P. Terry’s in Austin? Whataburger is the Texas-wide chain with 24-hour service and a long menu. P. Terry’s is the Austin-born chain, founded in 2005, with a shorter menu of simple burgers. My take: Whataburger wins after midnight and at breakfast, because that’s when its 24-hour network matters.
