Best Burgers in Berlin: Kreuzberg to Mitte

The best burgers in Berlin are found mostly in Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain and Neukölln, the districts east and south of the centre where eating late is part of daily life. Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg add sit-down burger restaurants. Expect smash burgers, thick grilled patties and plenty of plant-based versions in a city known for its vegan cooking.

Berlin’s burger scene has a landmark of its own. Burgermeister opened in 2006 inside a converted 1920s public toilet under the U1 viaduct at Schlesisches Tor, and it still serves well past midnight. A few streets away, Markthalle Neun, a historic market hall in Kreuzberg, has run Street Food Thursday since 2013, the weekly evening market that set the template for street food in the city. Burgers here compete with döner kebab and currywurst, Berlin’s two other fast-food icons, sold on almost every major street.
