2013: a young doctor opens Goiko Grill in Madrid

Goiko started as a single burger restaurant opened in 2013 on calle de María de Molina, in Madrid, by Andoni Goicoechea. Born in Caracas to a family of Basque descent, he had moved to Madrid to train as a specialist doctor and was a geriatrics resident at La Paz hospital (The Objective). He financed the restaurant with a 50,000-euro loan from his father and wrote the first menu with his sister Daniela (Goiko). The first months were nearly empty. He left the hospital to run the business full time, and a second restaurant followed on calle del Conde de Peñalver.

2014-2018: Kevin Bacon, delivery and the L Catterton deal

Goiko grew on burgers cooked to order, table service and heavy use of social media, and it was one of the first Spanish chains to work with home delivery apps (Wikipedia). The Kevin Bacon became its best-selling burger. In June 2018 L Catterton, the investment firm backed by LVMH, bought 80% of the company in a deal that valued it at 150 million euros. Goiko then had 41 restaurants in Spain, all run by the company itself (Alimarket). Its founder kept 20%.

2019-2024: Paris, Basic by Goiko and the islands

With 78 restaurants in Spain, Goiko opened its first address abroad on rue de Richelieu, in central Paris, at the turn of 2020 (L’Hôtellerie Restauration). In 2020 it launched Basic by Goiko, a delivery and takeaway format. The chain reached the Canary Islands in 2022, then the Balearic Islands and Andorra in 2023. 2025-2026: losses, Capza and 114 restaurants

Goiko changed hands in 2025 after two years of growing losses. It opened a 700-square-metre flagship on Puerta del Sol in Madrid, but its planned move into Lisbon stalled. Revenue fell 11.2% to 109 million euros in 2025 and the net loss reached 36.4 million euros. Capza, the French fund that had lent to the group, took control at the end of 2025 by converting debt into equity and now holds 98% (El Debate). In October 2026 the official restaurant finder lists 114 restaurants, 37 of them in the Madrid region and none left in France.
