This Sonic SuperSONIC Bacon Double Cheeseburger copycat makes 2 burgers in about 40 minutes. Each one stacks two 4 oz / 113 g beef patties, two slices of American cheese, shredded lettuce, sliced tomato, mayo and oven-crisped bacon on a butter-toasted bun, which is the build Sonic publishes. Sonic does not publish the seasoning, the bun or the cooking method, so those are my choices. This is a homemade reproduction, not Sonic’s official recipe.
What is on the Sonic SuperSONIC Bacon Double Cheeseburger?
The SuperSONIC Bacon Double Cheeseburger has two quarter-pound beef patties, two slices of American cheese, lettuce, sliced tomatoes, mayo and crispy bacon. Sonic’s own menu copy reads: “We start with two quarter-pound, 100% pure beef hamburgers, two melty slices of American cheese, lettuce, fresh sliced tomatoes, creamy mayo, and top it all off with crispy bacon.” I took that wording from Sonic’s syndicated menu for its Middletown, New Jersey drive-in, checked on October 13, 2026 (SinglePlatform).
No pickles, no onion, no ketchup, no mustard. Sonic’s official site (sonicdrivein.com/menu) blocked automated access on October 13, 2026, so I could not check the build there directly. Everything below refers to the US menu as published on that syndicated page.
Sonic Drive-In opened on June 18, 1953 in Shawnee, Oklahoma, as the Top Hat Drive-In, founded by Troy N. Smith Sr. It is headquartered in Oklahoma City. Inspire Brands bought it on December 7, 2018 for $2.3 billion. It runs more than 3,400 restaurants, all in the United States (Wikipedia).

Original vs copycat: how close is this recipe?
My version follows the published composition item by item. I only filled in what Sonic leaves out: the fat ratio, the seasoning, the bun and the cooking method.

Why this recipe tastes like the original burger
This copycat tastes like the SuperSONIC Bacon Double because it keeps the same five elements: a lot of beef, mild melted American cheese, cool lettuce and tomato, mayo and smoky bacon. With about 8 oz / 227 g of raw beef per burger, the meat leads, as it does at Sonic.
It also fixes the two flaws critics keep finding. Tasting Table ranked the burger last of 8 fast-food bacon cheeseburgers on September 27, 2025. Its writer found the patties bland and frozen-tasting and the bacon limp and stringy, and praised only the American cheese (Tasting Table). Eat This, Not That! called it “hefty, meaty” on November 24, 2024, but found the patties dry and the bacon soft after delivery (Eat This, Not That!).
My take: this is a burger worth making rather than ordering. The build is simple and honest, and both complaints are about execution, not the recipe. Bake the bacon until it shatters when you bend it, keep the patties thick and pull them the moment they hit 160°F / 71°C. That covers both complaints.
SuperSONIC Bacon Double Cheeseburger copycat ingredients for 2
These amounts make 2 burgers, about 1 lb / 454 g of beef in total. That is exactly four quarter-pound patties.
- 1 lb / 454 g ground beef, 80/20, cold
- 1 tsp kosher salt and 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 6 strips regular-cut bacon
- 4 slices American cheese
- 2 soft white burger buns, about 4.5 in / 11 cm wide
- 1 Tbsp / 14 g soft butter
- 1/4 cup / 55 g mayonnaise
- 1 cup / 30 g shredded iceberg lettuce
- 4 thin tomato slices
- Optional, not in Sonic’s bacon description: dill pickle chips and chopped white onion
Want a sturdier bun than store-bought? Bake my colleague Clara’s homemade burger buns the day before and shape them about 4.5 in / 11 cm wide. They are brioche, so a little richer than a plain white bun, but they hold two patties without tearing.
Step by step: how to make a Sonic bacon double cheeseburger at home
Bake the bacon first, then sear thick patties, melt the cheese and build right away. Total time is about 40 minutes: 15 minutes of prep and 25 minutes of cooking.
1. Bake the bacon until fully crisp
For bacon that stays crisp inside a hot burger, bake it until all the fat has rendered out. I heat the oven to 400°F / 200°C and lay 6 strips on a rack set over a foil-lined sheet pan. They need 15 to 20 minutes, until deep brown with no pale fat left. Then I drain them on paper towels. If the bacon is limp coming out of the oven, it will be limp in the bun.

2. Prep the lettuce and tomato
Cold, dry toppings keep the bun from going soggy. I shred 1 cup / 30 g of iceberg and cut 4 thin tomato slices. I pat the slices dry and keep everything in the fridge until assembly.
3. Shape four quarter-pound patties
Four 4 oz / 113 g patties match Sonic’s “two quarter-pound” build exactly. I divide 1 lb / 454 g of cold beef into 4 portions and shape each one loosely to the width of the bun, about 4.5 in / 11 cm, with a shallow dimple in the center so it stays flat. Fifteen minutes in the fridge helps them hold together on the heat.
4. Toast the buns
A butter-toasted bun stands up to two patties and the mayo. I spread 1 Tbsp of soft butter over the cut sides and toast them cut-side down in a skillet over medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes, until golden.
5. Sear the patties to 160°F / 71°C
Thick patties seared over medium-high heat stay juicy, and juiciness is exactly what critics found missing at Sonic. I heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high and season the patties with salt and pepper on both sides. Two at a time, 3 to 4 minutes per side, until the center reads 160°F / 71°C, the USDA safe internal temperature for ground beef (USDA FSIS). I check every patty with an instant-read thermometer and pull it right at 160°F. Not a minute later.
6. Melt the American cheese
American cheese melts in seconds and gives you that drive-in drape. Right after the flip, I lay 1 slice on each patty, splash 1 Tbsp of water into the pan away from the meat and cover it for 30 seconds.
7. Assemble the bacon double cheeseburgers
Build fast so the cheese is still molten when the burger closes. Sonic does not publish its stacking order, so this is mine. For each burger: mayo on the bottom bun, lettuce, tomato, the first cheesy patty, the second cheesy patty, 3 bacon strips, then the top bun spread with mayo. One minute of rest, then serve.

How much does the SuperSONIC Bacon Double Cheeseburger cost?
Sonic’s prices vary by location. The Sonic at 1511 Highway 35, Middletown, NJ 07748 lists the SuperSONIC Bacon Double Cheeseburger at $11.14 (medium) and $11.86 (large) on its syndicated menu, and the plain SuperSONIC Double Cheeseburger at $7.66. That page carries no date; I checked it on October 13, 2026 (SinglePlatform). Eat This, Not That! paid $8.89 for one in November 2024, without saying where. Price aggregator sites quote other numbers, but none of them cites Sonic, so I leave them out.

FAQ: SuperSONIC Bacon Double Cheeseburger
What ingredients are in a SuperSONIC Bacon Double Cheeseburger?
Two quarter-pound beef patties, two slices of American cheese, lettuce, fresh sliced tomatoes, mayo and crispy bacon, according to Sonic’s menu description checked on October 13, 2026. The bun and the seasoning are not listed.
How much do the SuperSONIC patties weigh?
Each patty is a quarter pound, about 4 oz / 113 g raw, so one burger carries about 8 oz / 227 g of beef. For 2 burgers you need 1 lb / 454 g.
How many calories are in a SuperSONIC Bacon Double Cheeseburger?
Third-party databases put it at roughly 1,100 to 1,250 calories; Sonic has confirmed neither figure. Eat This Much lists the version with mayo at 1,130 calories, 75 g fat (22 g saturated), 54 g carbs, 57 g protein and 2,000 mg sodium (Eat This Much). An archived FatSecret entry for an older version shows 1,240 calories for 396 g (FatSecret). Treat both as estimates, not official numbers.

What is the difference between the SuperSONIC Double and the SuperSONIC Bacon Double?
On the same Middletown, NJ menu, the plain SuperSONIC Double Cheeseburger comes with crinkle-cut pickles, chopped onions, shredded lettuce and tomatoes. The Bacon Double drops the pickles and onions and adds mayo and crispy bacon. Two other burgers often get mixed up with it. The 2022 Bacon on Bacon Quarter Pound Double split a quarter pound across two patties and added tangy smoke sauce (Inspire Brands). The 2023 SuperSONIC Double Stack came on a toasted brioche bun (Inspire Brands). Both were limited editions. Sonic also sells SONIC Smasher burgers, but I could not verify their official build, so I do not compare them here.
Does the SuperSONIC Bacon Double have ketchup, mustard or pickles?
No: Sonic’s description names only mayo as the sauce, with no ketchup, mustard, pickles or onion. You can customize at the drive-in, though. At home I sometimes add 3 pickle chips per burger for acidity. Leave them off for a faithful copy.
Smashed or thick patties to copy Sonic?
Thick patties are the better match, because Sonic describes quarter-pound hamburgers, not smashed ones. My jalapeño double copycat uses smashed patties for crisp edges. For the Bacon Double, I keep the meat thick and juicy so it holds its own against the bacon.
How do I keep bacon crispy inside the burger?
Bake it on a rack at 400°F / 200°C until no pale fat is left, drain it, and put it on top of the cheese, not under the tomato. Fully rendered bacon has little moisture left to soak up steam, so it stays crisp while you eat.
Is there a Sonic in the UK, Canada or Europe?
No. Sonic Drive-In operates only in the United States, with more than 3,400 restaurants (Wikipedia). Outside the US, this copycat is the only way to get one.
Is the SuperSONIC Bacon Double still on the menu?
It was listed on Sonic’s syndicated US menu (Middletown, NJ) when I checked on October 13, 2026. I could not confirm national availability on sonicdrivein.com, which blocked automated access that day. Check your local drive-in’s menu before you go.
