To make a Dave’s Double copycat at home, press 113 g (1/4 lb) of 80/20 ground beef into each of two thick squares, salt them and nothing else, then sear them on a very hot griddle to 71 °C (160 °F) inside. Melt a slice of American cheese on each one. Stack both on a toasted potato bun with ketchup, mustard, mayo, crinkle-cut pickles, onion, tomato and lettuce. Two burgers take about 30 minutes. That is the lineup on Wendy’s US menu in 2026, mustard and potato bun included, and those are exactly the two things most homemade Wendy’s double cheeseburger recipes online still leave out.
Homemade reproduction, not the official recipe. Wendy’s publishes the ingredients of the Dave’s Double but not its quantities, build order or grill temperature. I built this recipe from the official US menu description, Wendy’s own beef FAQ, press coverage and my own tests. The table below shows which is which. Reference market: United States, menu checked on October 17, 2026.
Wendy’s Dave’s Double ingredients: what’s in it?
A Wendy’s Dave’s Double is two square patties of fresh beef with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, ketchup, mustard, mayo and onion on a potato bun. Here is Wendy’s US description, word for word: “A half-pound* of fresh, never-frozen beef, American cheese, crisp lettuce, tomato, pickle, ketchup, mustard, mayo, and onion on a potato bun.” The asterisk means the weight is approximate, before cooking (Wendy’s).
Not every layer is documented. The table splits what Wendy’s says, what other sources add and what I chose.
| Component | What Wendy’s says | Other sources and history | My copycat choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beef | Half a pound of fresh, never-frozen beef, approximate weight before cooking; square patties cooked fresh on the grill (Wendy’s) | The Dave’s Single is “approximately a quarter pound”, so two quarter-pound patties is the logical reading | Two 113 g (1/4 lb) squares of 80/20 beef per burger |
| Seasoning | Not stated | Salt only, sprinkled on the grilled patty (The Daily Meal) | Fine salt, nothing else |
| Cheese | American cheese | Two slices on the 2011 Dave’s Single (Franchising.com); no count published for the Double | 2 slices, one per patty |
| Bun | Potato bun, “soft and slightly sweet”, since March 30, 2026 in the US (Franchising.com) | Buttered and toasted bun in 2011 | Potato bun, cut sides toasted |
| Sauces | Ketchup, mustard, mayo | Mustard was dropped in 2011 (NBC News) and is back on the 2026 menu | 1 tbsp ketchup, 1 tsp yellow mustard, 1 tbsp mayo per burger |
| Pickles | Pickle | Crinkle-cut dill pickles in 2011 | 4 crinkle-cut dill chips per burger |
| Onion | Onion | Red onion in 2011; sweet onion today, according to Tasting Table | Thin rings of sweet or red onion |
| Lettuce and tomato | Crisp lettuce, tomato | Hand-leafed lettuce in 2011 | 1 leaf of green-leaf lettuce, 2 tomato slices |
How much does the Dave’s Double patty weigh?
Each Dave’s Double patty is about a quarter pound (113 g) of raw beef, but that figure is my deduction. Wendy’s gives half a pound for the whole burger, before cooking, and a quarter pound for the single-patty Dave’s Single. It gives no weight per patty for the Double. Two 113 g patties make 226 g: the half pound on the menu.
How much does the Dave’s Double patty weigh? Raw beef per burger: about 113 g (1/4 lb) in the Dave’s Single and 227 g (1/2 lb) in the Dave’s Double, according to Wendy’s, against 226 g for two 113 g squares in this copycat. How to shape a double cheeseburger with square patties
A square patty for a Dave’s Double copycat should be about 11 cm (4.5 in) wide, so the corners still stick out past a round bun after the beef shrinks. Wendy’s says its patties are square “so our customers can see the quality beef”, and ties the shape to Dave Thomas’s motto about not cutting corners (Wendy’s). At home, press the beef between two sheets of parchment with the flat bottom of a pan, then square off the edges with a bench scraper. Pack it loosely. In 2011 Wendy’s switched to a thicker patty, packed less tightly and pressed 2 times instead of 8 (NBC News). That is the one lesson from the 2011 redo worth copying at home: the less you work the beef, the juicier the square.
Ingredients for 2 homemade Dave’s Doubles
For 2 burgers you need 450 g (1 lb) of ground beef, 4 slices of American cheese, 2 potato buns and the classic toppings. Every quantity below is my choice: Wendy’s publishes none.
- 450 g (1 lb) ground beef, 80/20, split into four 113 g (1/4 lb) portions
- Fine salt
- 4 slices American cheese
- 2 potato buns
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 2 tsp yellow mustard
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise
- 8 crinkle-cut dill pickle chips
- A few thin rings of sweet or red onion
- 4 tomato slices
- 2 leaves of green-leaf lettuce
Equipment: a large cast-iron skillet or griddle, parchment paper, a stiff spatula and an instant-read thermometer. For why I use 80/20 beef and how to read the thermometer, see our burger patty guide on beef and internal temperature.
Step by step: the Dave’s Double copycat recipe
Shape the squares first, prep the toppings while they chill, then toast the buns, sear the patties and build fast. Count about 30 minutes in total.
1. Shape the square patties
Divide the beef into four 113 g (1/4 lb) portions. Press each one between parchment into a square about 11 cm (4.5 in) wide and 1 cm (3/8 in) thick. Hold one against a bun: the corners should stick out well past the edge, because the patty shrinks as it cooks. Don’t skip this check. Those browned corners are what make it look like a Wendy’s burger rather than any other double. Chill the squares for 10 minutes so they hold their shape.
2. Prep the toppings
Slice the tomato and the onion thin, wash and dry the lettuce, and drain the pickle chips on paper towel. Set the ketchup, mustard and mayo next to the stove. Once the cheese melts, the patties are at their best for a minute or two, so everything has to be ready before they go on.
3. Toast the potato buns
Toast the cut sides of the buns in the dry skillet over medium heat until lightly golden, about 1 minute. Do it now, while the pan is only medium hot. Potato buns are soft and slightly sweet: they brown fast and burn easily.
4. Sear the patties
Heat the skillet or griddle until the surface reaches about 200–230 °C (400–450 °F). Salt the patties on both sides and sear them 3–4 minutes per side. Keep the spatula off them: pressing squeezes out the juice the looser 2011 patty was designed to keep. Cook them through to 71 °C (160 °F) inside, the USDA recommendation for ground beef (USDA FSIS). In a 26 cm (10 in) skillet, cook two patties at a time.
5. Melt the cheese
Right after flipping, lay one slice of American cheese on each patty. It melts during the last 3–4 minutes. In 2011 Wendy’s started keeping its cheese warmer so it would melt better on the beef. If the corners of the slice are still stiff, cover the pan for 20 seconds.
6. Assemble the Dave’s Double
On the bottom bun, stack one cheesy patty, then the second. Add 1 tbsp ketchup and 1 tsp mustard on top, then 4 pickle chips, the onion rings, 2 tomato slices and the lettuce. Spread 1 tbsp mayo on the top bun and close. Wendy’s has never published its build order, so this one is mine. I like the sauces right on the hot cheese and the mayo kept cold against the lettuce.
Why this Dave’s Double copycat tastes like the original
It comes close because it copies the five things that define the Dave’s Double and adds nothing Wendy’s does not list.
- Two thick quarter-pound squares. That matches the half pound on the menu and puts beef corners in every bite.
- Salt only. Most copycats online add pepper, garlic powder and onion powder. Salt is the only seasoning reported for Wendy’s patties, so I leave the rest out.
- Mustard is back. Wendy’s dropped mustard in 2011 and lists it again in 2026. Older copycats still skip it, and to me that is their biggest miss: without the tang, ketchup and mayo make the burger taste sweet and flat.
- A potato bun. Since March 30, 2026, the US Dave’s Double comes on a soft, slightly sweet potato bun. A brioche or a plain bun changes the bite.
- Hot cheese, cold toppings. Melted American cheese on each patty, against cold lettuce, tomato and mayo. That contrast is what separates a deluxe burger from a plain double cheeseburger.
Want to bake the buns yourself? My colleague Clara’s homemade burger buns recipe is a brioche dough, and one of its variations is a potato bun: swap 100 g of the flour for 150 g of cold mashed potato. That is the version I would bake for this burger. The plain brioche works too, but it is richer and more buttery than the bun Wendy’s uses now.
Dave’s Double calories and nutrition
A US Dave’s Double has about 810 to 850 calories, depending on which nutrition listing you read. Both figures come from FatSecret pages, not from Wendy’s: the official nutrition data did not load on order.wendys.com when I checked on October 17, 2026.
| Per burger (US, third-party data) | Value |
|---|---|
| Calories | 810–850 kcal |
| Fat | 53–57 g |
| Saturated fat | 23 g |
| Carbohydrates | 35 g |
| Protein | 49 g |
| Sodium | 1,280 mg |
Source: FatSecret, consulted October 17, 2026. The 850 kcal line, with the saturated fat, carbohydrate, protein and sodium figures, comes from a second indexed FatSecret page. I don’t give nutrition for the homemade version: it depends too much on your bun, cheese and beef.

From Hot ’N Juicy to 2026: a short history of the Dave’s Double
The Dave’s Double dates from September 2011. That month Wendy’s launched the Dave’s Hot ’N Juicy line, named after founder Dave Thomas. It was the chain’s first hamburger redo in 42 years, the result of “Project Gold Hamburger”, which started in early 2009 (NBC News). Wendy’s said the project took more than two years of development and input from 10,000 consumers (Franchising.com). Wendy’s itself goes back to 1969, when Dave Thomas opened his first restaurant in Columbus, Ohio. For the bigger picture, read our history of the hamburger.

According to NBC News, the 2011 recipe changed almost every layer:
- a thicker patty, packed looser and pressed 2 times instead of 8
- cheese kept warmer so it melts better
- red onion instead of white onion
- fewer crinkle-cut pickles
- no more mustard
- full-fat mayonnaise
- a buttered, toasted bun
At launch, the half-pound version, today’s Dave’s Double, cost $4.69. The quarter-pound cost $3.49 and the three-quarter-pound $5.79. Two of those 2011 choices have since been reversed. Mustard is back in the official description (I could not find when it returned), and the buttered bun gave way to the potato bun in March 2026.
Dave’s Hot ’N Juicy launch prices in the US, September 2011: $3.49 for the quarter-pound, $4.69 for the half-pound (today’s Dave’s Double) and $5.79 for the three-quarter-pound. Dave’s Double FAQ
What’s the difference between the Dave’s Double and the Double Stack? The Dave’s Double adds mayo, lettuce, tomato and a potato bun. According to Tasting Table, both burgers share ketchup, mustard, American cheese, sweet onion and crinkle-cut pickles (Tasting Table).
Wendy’s Double Stack (2016): two thin square patties with the corners sticking out, American cheese, no lettuce, tomato or mayo. Comparing it with the Dave’s Double shows how much the deluxe toppings and the thicker quarter-pound patties add. (Photo: Willis Lam, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=78710838)
Is there mustard on a Dave’s Double? Yes. Wendy’s US menu lists mustard in 2026. It was removed in the 2011 Hot ’N Juicy redo and has since come back, but I could not find a date for its return.
What bun does Wendy’s use for the Dave’s Double? A potato bun, described as soft and slightly sweet. Since March 30, 2026 it has been used for the US Dave’s Single, Double and Triple, the Baconator and the Son of Baconator. I could not confirm which bun the UK and Mexico use.
How many slices of cheese are on a Dave’s Double? Wendy’s does not say. The 2011 Dave’s Single had two slices of American cheese. For the Double, I use two slices, one per patty. That is a recipe choice, not an official count.
What seasoning does Wendy’s put on its burgers? Salt only, sprinkled on the grilled patty, according to The Daily Meal. Wendy’s has made no official statement on it. Skip the pepper and garlic powder if you want the original taste.
How much does a Dave’s Double cost? Wendy’s publishes no national US price, and the third-party menu sites that list one are not reliable, so I don’t give a 2026 price. At launch in 2011, the half-pound Dave’s cost $4.69 in the US.
Where can I eat a Dave’s Double outside the US? Wendy’s serves fresh, never-frozen beef in the contiguous US, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the UK and some other markets (Wendy’s). Wendy’s reopened in Mexico City on August 4, 2026, at Paseo de la Reforma 250 in Colonia Juárez. There the Dave’s Double was listed at 205, 230 and 234 MXN in regular, medium and large, probably combo prices (SDP Noticias). There is still no Wendy’s in France or Spain.
