To make an A&W Teen Burger at home, season 2 thin 3 oz (85 g) beef patties with salt and cracked black pepper and sear them in a very hot cast-iron pan, 2 to 3 minutes per side, until the center hits 160 °F (71 °C). Stack each one on a toasted sesame bun with real cheddar, bacon, ketchup, yellow mustard, dill pickles, onion, iceberg lettuce, tomato and a sweet, Miracle Whip-style Teen sauce. That’s the whole burger. This is my homemade copycat, not A&W’s recipe: A&W Canada publishes neither its patty seasoning nor its sauce formula, so every guess below is labeled as one.

My reference is the permanent A&W Canada menu as checked in October 2026. A&W Canada and A&W in the United States are separate companies, and this recipe follows the Canadian burger. More chain copycats and base techniques live on the Burger Breton recipes hub.

What is in an A&W Teen Burger?

The A&W Teen Burger is a single beef patty with real cheddar, bacon, lettuce, onion, tomato, pickles and Teen sauce on a toasted sesame seed bun. That is how A&W Canada describes it on its Teen Burger menu page, and Daily Hive lists the same build in its ranking of the A&W menu.

The published ingredient list fills in 3 things the menu blurb skips: A&W seasoning on the patty, ketchup and mustard alongside the Teen sauce, and a canola cooking spray. That list comes from Fast Food Nutrition, with data dated April 1, 2021. Charlie Bossy confirmed the ketchup and mustard in The Takeout in 2019.

A&W says the beef is grass-fed. In March 2020 the chain committed to sourcing only Canadian beef that is grass-fed and grass-finished, according to RFD-TV. Daily Hive adds that the bacon comes from pigs raised without antibiotics.

What we know and what we assume

Most of this copycat rests on published facts. 3 parts are educated guesses: the seasoning blend, the sauce proportions and the assembly order. The table separates the two.

Element Status Source or reasoning
Grass-fed beef patty, about 3 oz (85 g) Known, weight from 1 source Wikipedia, A&W (Canada) gives a 3 oz regular patty; A&W does not publish the weight
Real cheddar, bacon, lettuce, onion, tomato, pickles Known A&W Canada menu page, Daily Hive
Ketchup and yellow mustard Known Fast Food Nutrition, The Takeout
Teen sauce ingredients Known A&W Canada nutrition list from 2012
Teen sauce proportions Assumed The formula is proprietary
A&W seasoning blend Assumed Only its peppery, lightly spicy taste is documented

A&W Teen Burger copycat ingredients (2 burgers)

You need 6 oz (170 g) of 80/20 ground beef for 2 thin patties, plus the toppings below. The topping counts (two half slices of bacon and three pickle chips per burger) are my choices; A&W does not publish them.

Patties and seasoning

  • 6 oz (170 g) ground beef, 80/20
  • Kosher salt
  • Coarsely cracked black pepper
  • Optional: a pinch of onion powder

Teen sauce (makes about 2 tbsp)

  • 2 tbsp Miracle Whip or a similar sweet salad dressing
  • Or: 2 tbsp mayonnaise, 1/4 tsp sugar and 1/4 tsp white vinegar

Assembly

  • 2 sesame seed buns
  • 2 slices real cheddar
  • 2 slices bacon, cut in half
  • 2 tsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 6 dill pickle chips
  • 2 thin slices white onion
  • A few leaves iceberg lettuce
  • 2 slices tomato

Teen sauce recipe: what it really is

Teen sauce is a sweet, salad dressing-style sauce close to Miracle Whip, not plain mayonnaise and not a mayo-and-BBQ blend. In 2012, A&W Canada listed its ingredients as water, soybean oil, sugar, vinegar, modified corn starch, egg yolk, salt, mustard, spices and calcium disodium EDTA, as reproduced by the blog Mike Likes Burgers.

That list matters, because the popular copycats get it wrong. One Food.com version mixes mayo with Kraft BBQ sauce. Feedgrump calls Teen sauce a simple mix of ketchup, mustard and mayo. Neither survives a look at the official list: there is no BBQ sauce in it, and the ketchup and mustard go on the burger separately.

Water and sugar near the top of the list point to a dressing that is looser and sweeter than mayo. My pick is a jar of Miracle Whip, because it already is that kind of dressing and you skip the guesswork. With only mayonnaise in the fridge, I add 1/4 tsp of sugar and 1/4 tsp of white vinegar per 2 tbsp. Those proportions are my starting point, not A&W’s formula. Taste and adjust.

A&W seasoning copycat for the patty

A&W’s patty seasoning tastes peppery with a light kick, and salt plus coarsely cracked black pepper gets you most of the way there. The Takeout describes the patty as thin but juicy, dusted with an A&W seasoning that has spicy, peppery notes. Paste Magazine picked up a hint of peppercorn.

A&W has never published the blend. Paste reported in 2017 that the chain sells its burger seasoning in shakers inside its Canadian restaurants, and if you pass 1, buy a shaker: no copycat blend beats the real thing. Otherwise, salt, cracked pepper and an optional pinch of onion powder is my assumption, not the official mix. Go light on the onion powder. Pepper should lead.

How to make an A&W Teen Burger at home, step by step

Plan about 25 minutes: sauce first, then bacon and buns, and the 2 thin patties last, 2 to 3 minutes per side.

1. Mix the Teen sauce

Stir the sweet salad dressing, or the mayonnaise with sugar and vinegar, until smooth. Chill it while you cook.

2. Cook the bacon

Fry the 4 half slices of bacon in a skillet until crisp, then drain them on paper towels.

3. Shape thin patties

Divide the beef into 2 3 oz (85 g) portions and press each into a thin patty about 4.5 in (11 to 12 cm) wide. Make it a little wider than the bun, because it shrinks in the pan.

4. Toast the sesame buns

Toast the cut sides of the buns in a dry pan until golden. The Takeout describes the Teen Burger bun as toasted, lightly sweet and crisp, so don’t skip this step.

5. Season and sear the patties

Heat a cast-iron pan or griddle until very hot. Season both sides of the patties with salt and cracked pepper just before they go in, then sear for 2 to 3 minutes per side. Leave them alone: a 3 oz patty has little fat to spare, and pressing it squeezes out what juice it has.

6. Melt the cheddar

Lay a cheddar slice on each patty right after the flip. Cook until the center reads 160 °F (71 °C) and the cheese has melted.

7. Assemble the burger

Spread Teen sauce on the top bun, and ketchup and mustard on the bottom bun. Stack pickles, onion, the cheddar patty, bacon, tomato and lettuce, then close the burger.

Why this recipe tastes like the original

This copycat follows A&W Canada’s published build instead of the shortcuts other recipes take. 3 choices make the difference.

  • Real cheddar, not American cheese. A&W says real cheddar, and The Takeout found the melted cheddar sharper in taste. The best-known Food.com copycat uses American cheese anyway.
  • A thin 3 oz patty. Feedgrump uses 175 g patties, 3/4 in thick, about twice the weight Wikipedia gives. That is a different burger. A thin patty keeps the beef-to-topping balance of the original.
  • A sweet dressing for the Teen sauce, plus separate ketchup and mustard. That matches both the 2012 sauce ingredient list and the burger’s ingredient list.

Where to eat the real Teen Burger

You can only order the original at A&W restaurants in Canada. The chain calls itself Canada’s original burger chain and counted more than 1,070 restaurants in May 2025, according to its Steakhouse Teen Burger press release. To taste it before you cook it, my colleague Olivia’s guide to A&W in Ottawa’s Rideau Centre lists addresses and opening hours. For the wider Quebec scene, see the best burgers in Quebec City.

A&W also runs limited editions built on the Teen Burger. The Steakhouse Teen Burger, launched on May 12, 2025, added bacon jam, peppercorn aioli and arugula, and was not offered in Quebec. The Hot Honey BBQ Teen Burger arrived across Canada on October 8, 2026 with a Hot Honey BULL’S-EYE BBQ sauce, according to Todocanada. A&W has not published a national price or an end date for it.

A&W Teen Burger FAQ

What is in an A&W Teen Burger?

A grass-fed beef patty with A&W seasoning, real cheddar, bacon, lettuce, onion, tomato, pickles, ketchup, mustard and Teen sauce on a toasted sesame seed bun, per A&W Canada and Fast Food Nutrition.

Is Teen sauce just mayonnaise?

No. The Takeout found it tastes a lot like mayo, but its 2012 ingredient list (water, soybean oil, sugar, vinegar, modified corn starch, egg yolk) describes a sweet salad dressing closer to Miracle Whip.

Does Teen sauce contain BBQ sauce?

Not according to the published ingredient list. The BBQ sauce in some copycat recipes is their own addition.

What cheese is on a Teen Burger, cheddar or American?

Cheddar. A&W Canada lists real cheddar, so this recipe uses a slice of cheddar instead of American cheese.

How much does a Teen Burger patty weigh?

About 3 oz (85 g), according to Wikipedia. A&W does not publish the weight, and I found no second source for it.

What seasoning does A&W use, and can you buy it?

A&W has not published its blend, which tastes peppery and lightly spicy. Paste reported in 2017 that A&W sells its burger seasoning in shakers in its Canadian restaurants.

How many calories are in a Teen Burger?

A&W’s Teen Burger has 500 calories, with 11 g of saturated fat, 70 mg of cholesterol and 910 mg of sodium, per Fast Food Nutrition. Fat, carbohydrate and protein figures differ from 1 source to another, so check A&W’s own nutrition page for those.

What allergens does a Teen Burger contain?

Egg, gluten, milk, mustard, sesame, soy and wheat, and it may contain fish, shellfish and sulphites. See A&W Canada’s allergen guide.

Can I make a Teen Burger without a bun?

Yes. A&W Canada offers a lettuce-wrapped Teen Burger, so you can wrap this copycat in large iceberg leaves instead of the sesame bun.

Is the Teen Burger sold in the United States?

I could not confirm it: I have not verified the current US menu. A&W Canada and A&W in the US are separate companies. Unilever bought the Canadian business in 1972, and Canadian managers and franchisees took it over in 1995. This recipe follows the Canadian Teen Burger as of October 2026.

Where does the Teen Burger name come from?

It belongs to the Burger Family (Papa, Mama, Baby and Teen) that the American A&W chain created in the early 1960s. The family was nearly dropped in the 1980s, then revived in Canada from the late 1990s, per Wikipedia.

What temperature should a homemade burger reach?

160 °F (71 °C) in the center, the safe internal temperature for ground beef set by Health Canada. On a patty this thin, an instant-read thermometer is the only reliable check.
