Best Burgers in Salzburg: Altstadt to Lehen

The best burgers in Salzburg are split between the two banks of the Salzach. On the left bank, the Altstadt around Getreidegasse caters largely to visitors; on the right bank, the Neustadt, Linzer Gasse and Schallmoos lean more local. Lehen, north-west of the old town, adds neighbourhood restaurants away from the tour groups.

Salzburg invented its own fast food long before burgers arrived. The Bosna, two thin pork bratwursts in a toasted white roll with onions, parsley and a secret spice mix, was created by Zanko Todoroff in 1949, and it is still served at the Balkan Grill in the old town. The countryside around the city has its own cattle breed, the Pinzgauer, named after the Pinzgau valleys south of Salzburg. Beer comes from Augustiner Bräu in Mülln, a monastery brewery with one of the largest beer gardens in Austria.
