For RocoMamas in Johannesburg, go to RocoMamas Rosebank at The Zone @ Rosebank on Cradock Avenue. It is the branch I would pick for most visitors: you can walk there from the Rosebank Gautrain station, and it opens at 9am every day. It also holds 4.3/5 from about 1,860 Google reviews. A smash burger on the national menu costs R79 to R159, and the Old Skool at R79 is the cheapest. Need halal? Head to the certified branches at Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton or at Melrose Arch. I checked every address, opening time and price below on the official RocoMamas website on 14 October 2026.

RocoMamas in Johannesburg: the short answer

RocoMamas is a South African smash burger chain that was founded in Johannesburg in July 2013 and now lists 48 restaurants across Gauteng province. Branches in the greater Johannesburg area include Rosebank, Sandton (Nelson Mandela Square and Grayston Drive), Melrose Arch, Randburg, Rivonia, Auckland Park, Southgate, The Glen and Fourways. Most sit inside shopping centres. Great if you drive. If you rely on the Gautrain, only a handful make sense.

  • Best for visitors without a car: RocoMamas Rosebank, walking distance from the Gautrain station.
  • Best for halal diners: RocoMamas Nelson Mandela Square – Halaal (Sandton) or RocoMamas Melrose Arch – Halaal.
  • For families north of the city: RocoMamas Randburg, on the same road as the very first RocoMamas, and listed as child-friendly.
  • Price of a burger: R79 to R159 on the national menu, fries extra from R37.

RocoMamas Rosebank is at Shop CR01 & CR010S, The Zone @ Rosebank, Cradock Avenue, Rosebank, Johannesburg 2196, and it opens daily from 9am. I made it the featured branch for one reason: no RocoMamas in Johannesburg is easier to reach without a car. The Zone @ Rosebank (177 Oxford Road) sits between Rosebank Mall and the Rosebank Gautrain station, so you can walk over from the train (In Your Pocket).

Which RocoMamas to choose in Johannesburg: main branches compared

The right RocoMamas in Johannesburg depends on where you are staying, and on two questions: do you need halal food, and are you travelling by public transport? I could not find a single page that lines the city’s branches up side by side, so I built this table from the official RocoMamas Gauteng store list. Phone numbers and hours appear only where the official branch page gives them.

The official list names more branches in and around the city: Mall of the South, Pineslopes (Fourways), Fourways Mall, Dainfern, Bel Air (Northriding), Cresta Crossing (Randburg), Horizon View (West Gate), Lenasia – Halaal, Bedfordview and Eastgate. Strictly speaking, Bedfordview and Eastgate are in Ekurhuleni, just east of Johannesburg. For anything else, the brand’s national number is 0860 888 772 and its general email is howzit@rocomamas.co.za.

RocoMamas Sandton: Nelson Mandela Square

RocoMamas Nelson Mandela Square – Halaal is the Sandton branch most visitors will find first, at Shop 109, Nelson Mandela Square, 5th Street, Sandown, open daily 10am – 10pm. It offers dine-in, takeaway and online ordering, and it is halal certified according to the official branch page. Searching for “RocoMamas Sandton”? Grayston Drive and Rivonia are in Sandton too.

RocoMamas Randburg: on the road where the brand began

RocoMamas Randburg sits in Appletons Village on Malibongwe Drive, the same road as the very first RocoMamas. BizNews photographed the founders “at the original restaurant in Malibongwe Drive” in 2019. I could not confirm that today’s Randburg branch occupies the same premises. Call it the brand’s home turf, not the original shop.

RocoMamas Johannesburg menu and prices (October 2026)

RocoMamas smash burgers cost R79 to R159 on the national South African menu as of 14 October 2026, with a 150 g beef patty unless stated otherwise. These prices come from the official RocoMamas menu, and they match what I recorded on 9 October 2026 for our Stellenbosch guide. Two caveats. RocoMamas does not say whether branches charge different prices, and the halal branches use a separate PDF menu that I have not checked.

On paper, the value picks sit at both ends. The Old Skool gets you a 150 g patty for R79. The Slacker’s 300 g of beef works out at about R53 per 100 g, the lowest rate on the menu. The R129 burgers in between are where you pay for toppings rather than meat.

Limited editions on 14 October 2026

Three limited-edition burgers were on the menu on 14 October 2026. The King Pin costs R119, with a double 100 g smash patty, gouda and a brioche bun. The Head Honcho, at R82, pairs fried chicken with cheddar and mushroom sauce. And the Top Don, fried chicken and coleslaw for R69, was the cheapest burger on the menu that day. Limited editions rotate, so check the menu before you go.

Wings, pork ribs and loaded fries take up as much of the menu as the burgers do.

  • Shoestring fries R37 (large R56), curly fries R45
  • Cheesy Fries or Chilli Cheese Fries from R54
  • Mac’n’Cheese R49, Mac’n’Nash R89
  • Nachos Classico R130 (half portion R75)

Milkshakes, drinks and desserts

Kids’ menu: Lil’ Rock

Yes, RocoMamas has a kids’ menu called Lil’ Rock, for children under 12, and every item comes with fries. The Roadster Burger costs R72, the Cheese Burger R79, Chicken Strips R57 and 4 wings R69.

Vegetarian options at RocoMamas

RocoMamas has no vegetarian or plant-based burger on its national South African menu as of 14 October 2026. The only meat-free dishes I could confirm are the Chopped Green Salad at R40 and the Spicy Slaw at R45; fries, mac’n’cheese and waffles also look meat-free from their menu descriptions. A vegetarian will eat. They will not eat well.

What a RocoMamas burger costs: a sample order

A RocoMamas meal for one costs about R145 to R215 at national menu prices, before the tip. My go-to order on paper would be a Rockstar (R109), shoestring fries (R37) and a G-Shake (R50): R196. Swap the Rockstar for a Bacon Cheeze Guac (R129) and you reach R216. On a budget? The Old Skool (R79) with fries and a soft drink (R27) comes to R143. Add the tip at the table, as is usual in South Africa.

Sample RocoMamas orders for one, tip not included: Rockstar, shoestring fries and G-Shake R196; Bacon Cheeze Guac, fries and G-Shake R216; Old Skool, fries and soft drink R143. Tip at the table, as is usual in South Africa. (Table: Burger Breton, calculated from rocomamas.com/za/menu prices, 14 October 2026)

RocoMamas Johannesburg reviews: what diners say about Rosebank

RocoMamas Rosebank scores 4.3/5 on Google from 1,862 reviews and 4.0/5 on Tripadvisor from 65 reviews, according to Wanderlog on 14 October 2026. I took these figures from Wanderlog, which aggregates both platforms, and did not check them directly on Google Maps. For the Nelson Mandela Square, Melrose Arch, Randburg and Rivonia branches I found no verifiable ratings, so I give none.

RocoMamas Rosebank ratings: Google 4.3/5 from 1,862 reviews and Tripadvisor 4.0/5 from 65 reviews, shown as two bars on a 5-point scale, as aggregated by Wanderlog on 14 October 2026. 800×300 SVG. (Chart: Burger Breton, data from Wanderlog (Google and Tripadvisor aggregates), checked 14 October 2026)

What diners praise:

  • Tender ribs and good marinades
  • Friendly staff
  • Burgers that are consistent from visit to visit
  • A lively setting at The Zone that feels safe
  • Easy access from the Gautrain

What diners criticise:

  • Buns served cold
  • Dishes that reach the table at different times
  • Slow service at peak times
  • Mistakes in orders

My verdict from the data: Rosebank is a dependable, well-rated branch in the best location the chain has in the city. Read the complaints closely and they are about timing, not taste. So go outside the lunch and dinner rush if you want your burger, fries and shake to land together. I have not eaten at a Johannesburg branch myself, so this guide gives no personal rating.

Is RocoMamas halal in Johannesburg?

Not every RocoMamas is halal: in Johannesburg, the branches marked “Halaal” in the official list are RocoMamas Nelson Mandela Square (Sandton), RocoMamas Melrose Arch and RocoMamas Lenasia. The official Nelson Mandela Square page states that it is halal certified. Halal branches have their own PDF menu, separate from the national menu, so prices and dishes may differ. The regular menu includes bacon and pork ribs. Never assume a branch without “Halaal” in its name is halal.

A Johannesburg brand: the history of RocoMamas

RocoMamas was founded in Johannesburg in July 2013 by Brian Altriche, and Spur Corporation, listed on the JSE, now owns the majority of it. The first restaurant opened on Malibongwe Drive in Randburg. BizNews names Brian Altriche and Paul Dempsey as the two founders (BizNews, 20 May 2019).

Spur did not wait long. On 21 January 2015, Spur Corporation announced it was buying 51% of the brand, which then had four restaurants in greater Johannesburg and three more planned (News24). Today the Gauteng list alone runs to 48, and Spur opened five more RocoMamas in South Africa in the half-year ended December 2025 (TimesLIVE).

RocoMamas timeline: July 2013, founded in Johannesburg, first restaurant on Malibongwe Drive, Randburg. 21 January 2015, Spur Corporation buys 51% (4 restaurants, 3 planned). H2 2025, five new South African openings. 2026, 48 branches in Gauteng. (Table: Burger Breton, sources News24 (2015), BizNews (2019), TimesLIVE (2026), rocomamas.com)

The brand sells itself as “not normal”: funky decor, rock ‘n’ roll music, open kitchens, smash burgers, Mofo wings and ribs (Simbisa Brands). The official branch pages also say each restaurant shows work by local artists. So if you have eaten at RocoMamas in Stellenbosch, you already know a brand that started here in Johannesburg.

How RocoMamas fits into Johannesburg’s burger scene

RocoMamas is Johannesburg’s home-grown smash burger chain, and the easiest burger to find in the city’s malls. How I built this guide

I built this guide from official and published sources only, all checked on 14 October 2026. Addresses, phone numbers, hours and services come from the official RocoMamas branch pages and the Gauteng store list. Prices come from the official national menu. Ratings come from Wanderlog, which aggregates Google and Tripadvisor, and the review themes summarise those platforms. The brand history comes from News24, BizNews, BusinessLIVE and TimesLIVE. I did not visit a branch, so there is no personal rating. Prices and limited editions change: check the official menu before you go.
