Best Burgers in Porto: Baixa, Cedofeita, Foz

The best burgers in Porto are easiest to find in the Baixa, the downtown streets between Avenida dos Aliados and the Mercado do Bolhão, and in Cedofeita, the gallery and student quarter just west of it. Boavista and Foz do Douro, toward the Atlantic, have a calmer, more residential spread of places.

Porto measures any heavy sandwich against the francesinha. Invented in the city in the mid-20th century, it layers bread with ham, linguiça sausage and steak, covers the lot in melted cheese and soaks it in a hot tomato and beer sauce. A burger here competes with that, and with the cachorrinho, a thin, crisp sausage sandwich. Locals are nicknamed tripeiros after tripas à moda do Porto, the tripe stew that remains the city’s emblem dish.
