Best Burgers in Lisbon: Cais do Sodré to Chiado

The best burgers in Lisbon are concentrated in a short walk of the river: Cais do Sodré, Chiado, Bairro Alto and Príncipe Real, with a second, more residential cluster in the Avenidas Novas. Most burger kitchens here, called hamburguerias, serve aged or locally raised beef in brioche or Portuguese bread rolls.

Lisbon had a meat-in-bread culture long before burgers. The bifana, thin pork steak marinated in garlic and wine, and the prego, a thin beef steak with garlic, are both served in a crusty papo-seco roll and eaten standing at a counter. A good Lisbon burger competes with those two, so look for kitchens that cook the patty with the same care. Pork from the Alentejo’s black pigs, porco preto, is the regional meat that sometimes replaces beef.
