Best Burgers in Hangzhou: Where to Look

The best burgers in Hangzhou are found mostly near West Lake, in the Hubin shopping streets on the lake’s eastern shore, and around Wulin Square, the city’s older commercial centre. Newer restaurants tend to open for office crowds in Qianjiang New City, the business district on the Qiantang River, and in Binjiang on the opposite bank, home to many tech companies.

West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011, shapes the city. Most visitors spend at least a day on its shores, and the hills to the west grow Longjing, or Dragon Well, green tea. Hangzhou cooking belongs to the Zhejiang tradition: milder than Sichuan or Hunan food and slightly sweet. Its best-known dishes are Dongpo pork, slow-braised pork belly named after the Song dynasty poet Su Dongpo, and West Lake fish in vinegar sauce. The tech economy, with Alibaba headquartered in the city, has brought a large population of young workers to Binjiang and the west of Hangzhou.
