Best Burgers in Daejeon: Where to Look

The best burgers in Daejeon are found in three areas: Dunsan-dong, the newer downtown around City Hall and the government complex; Eunhaeng-dong, the old centre near Daejeon Station; and Yuseong-gu, home to KAIST, Chungnam National University and the student streets of Gung-dong. Daejeon has little documented burger history, so these central and student districts are where to look first.

Daejeon is known in Korea as a science city. It hosts the Daedeok research complex, held the 1993 Expo, and its universities and institutes give it a large population of students and researchers. Its food reputation, though, rests on other things: kalguksu, knife-cut noodle soup, and bakeries that draw visitors from across the country. That makes the city a bread town before a burger town, and a well-made bun is a fair thing to judge a Daejeon burger on. Daejeon Station is about an hour from Seoul by KTX, so many visitors start downtown.
