Best Burgers in Osaka: Kita, Minami and More

The best burgers in Osaka are split between the city’s two hubs: Kita, around Umeda station, and Minami, which takes in Namba, Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori. Amerikamura, the “American Village” west of Shinsaibashi, grew in the 1970s around shops selling imported US clothes and records, and it is the obvious first stop for American-style burgers. Further north, Tenjinbashisuji, a covered shopping street of about 2.6 km, adds small counters and cafés.

Osaka’s food motto is kuidaore, roughly “eat until you drop”, and its comfort food comes glazed: okonomiyaki and takoyaki are brushed with a thick, sweet and savoury brown sauce. Beef country is next door. Kobe beef comes from Tajima cattle raised in neighbouring Hyogo prefecture, so wagyu patties are easy to source here. One word to know on Japanese menus: a hambāgu is a hamburg steak served on a plate, often with rice, while a hambāgā is the burger in a bun.
