Best Burgers in Accra: Osu to East Legon

The best burgers in Accra are concentrated in a handful of neighbourhoods: Osu, around Oxford Street, nearby Labone and Cantonments, the Airport Residential Area, and East Legon, on the road north towards the University of Ghana. Beef and chicken burgers dominate, and a Ghanaian condiment is rarely far from the plate.

That condiment is shito, a dark, oily hot sauce cooked from dried fish or shrimp, ginger, garlic and chilli. Ghanaians spoon it onto rice, kenkey and fried yam, and it works just as well on a beef patty. Accra’s grill culture lives on the street. Chichinga, also sold as khebab, is beef on a skewer dusted with a ground peanut and pepper spice, grilled in the evening at roadside stands. Kelewele, cubes of ripe plantain fried with ginger and chilli, is the city’s own answer to fries and a strong side for any burger.
